305 cu in V8 engines were good and very reliable engines, I had a 1977 Camaro with one of those, also a 1982 Pontiac Boneville.

The 3.9 liter V6 in my 2009 Impala seems like a good engine too - almost 100k miles, zero problems.

Late 70's and early 80's V8's made so little horsepower...dark days.

Exactly what I was thinking... I had an 82 Trans Am with the 305. Economy cars today make more power than that engine did!

I've always liked the 350, although my brother had an old truck with a 454 that ran great.

You can't go wrong picking the 350, tried and true, and I believe it's the longest ever production run of any engine (if you include all of its small-block v8 cousins). It's that way for a reason. Had a neighbor who was a GM Dealer mechanic, who told me a 350 would run on as little as 8 psi oil pressure at idle. I personally wouldn't try that, but it was one of his quotes attesting to their bulletproof design.

Personally, I've had a 292 in an old 60's truck, I've had several 350's, a 305 (slow!), and currenlty the 5.3 from 2002. I've treated all my vehicles the same, and if I had to pick a winner in my opiniion, it's the GEN III Vortec 5.3. Decent economy for what it is, great power, and longevity for me has been ridiculous. Currenlty 314,000 on original engine (and trans), burns no oil and runs very well.

I found this, about the design of the GEN III v8's, showing some of the detals of the engine design. Quite impressive I think.

But I'd never knock a 350, stovebolt 6, or the 4.3 v6.

4.8, 5.3, 6.0. A stock 350 can't touch the power and they're much friendlier to work on. I will say, the EFI 350 in my 1990 was very reliable til it blew. But literally everything is easier on my 5.3.

305 + wet cylinders.

not sure which ones got it, you know if you had it.

I killed two 350s. Not going for a third.

the 301 pontiac was interesting, needed injection to get over the super smoothy lack of signals...but I liked it.

the bop motors could miss a cylinder, and you would not even know it. the goal was to keep running comfortable.

rather funny.

I am on my fourth 305, real world favorite. the youthful, and crack head addiction, manic lunacy, leaping and jumping like an uncut gelding..

those days go away.

they become a 305 for the long haul. :)
