Can't plug duramax in at -40 or lower?

Recommended Posts

Started a new job recently and just realized there's no where to plug my block heater in. Just concerned how the truck will do when it's -40 and it sits for 12+ hours without being ran or plugged in? Should I just keep idling it every time I come back to the office to keep some heat in the engine?

If this is going to be a long term kind of thing, there are alternative solutions. Webasto and Espar make diesel fired coolant heaters that can be operated on a timer. They are permanently mounted on the truck and use diesel from the main fuel tank. About 1/8th gallon per hour. They can be set by the user to start up about an hour or more before you need to use the pickup and will have the entire engine coolant up to 150F in one hour. Many commercial truck owners use these things. You would have to go to commercial truck dealership or similar parts outlet to obtain one of these. Not exactly cheap, but do a heck of a job. Saves a LOT of wear and tear as opposed to engine idling and saves a lot of fuel as well.
