Still Not Sold On A Catch Can? Check Here...

I don't have a catch can.

The area you live in and your driving habits would affect the amount a catch can collects I would think.

High humidity, short trips, PCV valve condition come to mind.

traded in my 2007 Suburban LTZ (5.3L) last fall, after I had just got her broke in at 286,000 miles, with NO MODS

This engine even had the AFM which worked seamlessly.

Engine ran PERFECT, not even a tick, hated to see her go

50/50 city highway, cold ass winters (Minnesota) and hot/humid summers - weather never a factor

I get the want/need for performance add ons, but otherwise - change you oil religiously, service all the other fluids per the book at a minimum and you should have many years of reliable service!

I average 35,000 - 40,000 miles a year, always had good luck with engines - I just give them the love they need and they return the favor.

OH, and NO CATCH CAN.

Not a direct inject engine. Your valves got cleaned by fuel. The L83/86 have no such cleaning mechanism. Minimizing valve exposure to contaminants in the first place, via catch can, seems like a logical step to take to reduce build up in these engines.

Absolutely agree about fluid maintenance whether it be your change intervals or how you filter it, keeping good lubricant in the truck is key to longevity.

I'm catching somewhere around an ounce every 1,000 miles in my catch can. I figure I'd rather it be in the can than the intake - I know I'm not catching it all but it's better than nothing.

I've seen quite a few direct injected 5.3's that use oil, can't be good for the backside of those valves.

I add maybe a half quart in between my 5,000 mile oil change (16,000 miles 2018).

Has anyone had a warranty issue with a catch can?  23 years of driving and I finally broke down and bought a new truck with a warranty I'd rather not void.  I'm all for modding vehicles but not to kill my warranty is a priority - I'm not looking to wrench on this truck beyond necessary (non-warranty voiding mods) and normal maintenance items.

I fully understand the need for a CC.  I drive one of the notoriously bad valve gunkers, a BMW 335i (E92 6MT) with the N54 engine.  BMW even makes a walnut blasting adapter for this motor.  I put a catch can on it a couple days after I got it and also upgraded the PCV valve.

The way mine is set up it only takes a couple minutes to take it off. I'm taking mine into the dealer in the morning for some warranty work. I just yanked it off, took like 5 minutes. I don't think it would matter but I would rather not risk it. I don't know how much they help but mine catches a bunch of oil. I probably collect a couple ounces or so every fill up. Not sure if it helps but it makes me feel better.

Some dealers raise heck about catch cans and others don't. When I asked my dealer about a catch can before I installed, they said, yes, it would void powertrain warranty. I don't think it actually would, but I'm not going to argue with them. Whenever I take my truck in for work at the dealership, my CC comes off (only takes a few minutes....also pull my Range AFM disabler). Dealership is none the wiser. When I get the truck back, I reinstall them (Range + CC).

I’m new to the site but have followed it since I started seriously considering a Sierra. Well I pulled the trigger and got the 2018 SLT 6.2 with a bit more features than I wanted or needed but GF just had to have the sunroof ?. Anyway, I ordered the RX catch can and if you install it correctly (obviously you did, whatever brand you have) it would be extremely easy to remove prior to a dealer visit. The only thing I would add is (and this really should go without saying) to keep your stock parts, label them if it helps and simply reinstall when needed. Awesome site guys/gals. I’ve learned a lot here before my purchase!

I ended up ordering the UPR single port kit and will simply pull it when making a dealer trip. No reason to take the chance.

Does anyone know how to get the stock quick disconnects that are on the lines that connect to the barbs? I know there are straight and 90 degree fittings. If you have a part number that would be awesome. I will never give my dealer a reason to question a mod like a catch can so I will be removing and reinstalling for any dealer visits...if I happen to break one or it gets a bit sloppy from repeated removals I’d sure like to have a few on hand. My apologies if this was covered in a different thread, still learning my way around. Thank you!

I tried to find out the size of those with out any success. I'm using 7/16 fuel line with standard hose clamps for the catch can. I'm just letting the OEM line and connectors laying on the manifold for quick reconnect. If you find which quick disconnect it uses please let me know.
