3.08 to 4.56 Gear swap?

Recommended Posts

Well, thing is, they ordered all the parts thru aftermarket vendors. And the vendor said not to do it because it's not worth it and it won't even last as long as my 3.08s. Which only lasted 12k miles. Lol. They also said if they did it they couldn't put a warranty on it, actually nobody would because of the housing. They can put a warranty on 3.73s and its OEM.

I don't see how the housing will decrease the life of the gears. Maybe not enough fluid getting to the gears to cool them properly?

To match the angle of the drive shaft, they apparently had to angle the axle up to match the driveshaft this the gear oil isn't lubricating properly. And also they'd have to dremel the housing to fit 4.56s. So that could also do harm later down the road.

AAM is the manufacture of these axles and they have an aftermarket 4.10 ratio.

So I looked into AAM. And I have to say, it answered all my questions in a matter of minutes. I have the 12 bolt 9.5" rear end in my '14 Z71 Double cab, and the lowest gears I can get are 4.10s. Anything past 4.10s and I would have to have to get the 14 bolt rear end. So 4.56s are out of the question, but 4.10s should do me justice for now. Thanks again guys.

Not saying they aren't telling you the truth but if that's the case, but why aren't other 6 inch lifted trucks having a problem with diff gears not being lubed properly and failing because of driveshaft/diff angles? I know some lift makers had that issue when they first released their 6 inch lift for 2014+ trucks but they have since corrected the problem. Since, I haven't heard of any issues.....

Am I off base?

I like how mine sits as well, but 35s with a 3.08 literally means my transmission doesn't know it has a 6th gear and I barely see 5th. Lol

I went with 4.10 gears since I have 3.08s right now. I'm having Da Drop Shop here in midland Texas install it all. They priced me $2k for parts and labor.

What ratio do you have right now?

So how are you going to 4.56s? I was told anything over 4.10s on the 12 bolt 9.5" would need dremeling..

i dont know, i dont think they dremel any thing, they replace the whole carrier and add a spacer that goes inbetween your diif and the cover, because the new carrier is bigger then stock, its not just a ring and pinion repacement, its the whole carreier

Hmm. Well, I'll stick with the 4.10s for now. I have my eyes on 2012 cummins I may trade for. If not then I'll go up to 37s and 4.10s shouldn't struggle too much with that.. I hope.
