Do You Wait For The Oil Change Reminder In Your GM?

I will stop using the OLM when I actually wear out an engine following the OLM.  I have a 2016 Silverado 2500HD with the 6.0 Vortec and 45k miles.  When should I expect my 6.0 to give up the ghost by following the OLM, using Supertech 5w30 and Delco filters?

Well D'ah?

Do you keep looking for you keys after you've found them?

:idiot:

It that a trick question?

I'll tell you when it will 'give up the ghost' IF you will tell me how long it will last given your choices.

Exact number now, no fudging.

Oil cleanliness.
This is why I do 3 K OCI.
Why I use of the shelf oil also due to cost.
The cost maybe the same as expensive oil ran for longer OCI's but clean, new oil is what I like.

I use the computer as a reminder to look at my mileage lol. I change every 4-5K miles and sooner (4K miles) when running a mix of E85 mixed in with my fuel, apparently E85 is known to cause sooner oil changes. I’d buy the best oil and filter you can afford based on your OCI’s and be consistent, you’ll be glad you did.

my point was just that most of us are never going to wear out an engine using the OLM and whatever oil that meets the minimum spec.

DID YOU SAY MINIMUM SPECS??? YUCK!! Why pay close to $50 k truck to use the cheapest oil available? You don’t have to answer that, good luck with that.

go to bitog and self educate a bit.  the hysteria over this stuff is silly and primarily a result of good old-fashioned ignorance.

if you want to run an extended oci then yes, carefully picking an oil with a good additive package is critical.  but if you just follow the olm, any old dexos in the correct grade for your truck is fine.

again, virtually no one on this forum is going to wear out their engine by following the olm and using any oil that meets gm spec.

No need to go through all that. I could say the same for you, how would you know what’s happening to your engine until it breaks? This is why there are so many different rated oils in the market, minimum requirements only meet the lowest requirements of the manufacturer which is why you only get 36k mile warranty and once that’s over with you’re on your own. Ignorance is two-fold, use high quality products and receive high quality protection but I guess we’re all ignorant for wanting to extend the life of our engines. You “ALLWAYS” get what you pay for, want minimum requirements, get minimum protection.

Btw, just cause someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t give you the right to call them ignorant, it’s two-fold. There are many that use superior products not because they can afford to but because they can’t afford not to.

Last time I was at the dealership I was asked whether I’d be interested in their superior additives, I laughed and said “I’m an Amsoil guy” and the reply was priceless, “no wonder we never see you in here, can’t compete with that!” Need I say more...lol

You would be surprised to find out how dirty 'fresh clean' oil actually is. From BITOG one fella tested four filters with the following ISO codes: (The last two numbers are the two number codes for the charts that follow.) Another fella virgin oil

https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/4859910/2

Filter A ISO 24/22/17

Filter B ISO 24/21/15

Filter C ISO 24/20/15

Filter D ISO 23/17/12

Virgin oil sample ISO 22/20/16

I try not to wait for the engine life monitor. Usually around 5000 miles for the engine using Mobil 1 synthetic and Mobil filter. Suspension also greased at the same time with synthetic grease.

Transmissions and differentials are at 20-25000 miles using synthetics.

The blazer gets regular dino oil at 3000 mile intervals with the mobil filter.

2013 Silverado: 28,000 miles

2006 Silverado:175,000 miles

2003 Tahoe: 178,000 miles

2002 Silverado: 162,000 miles

2001 Yukon: 206,000 miles

2000 Sierria: 250,000 miles

2000 Blazer: 138,000 miles

1999 Silverado: 258,000 miles

All done in house..

There is a fair amount of petroleum products consumed around here!

Andy

I was using the Mobil 1 filters because of the “enhanced filtration”, but figured out it was choking my F150 engine at startup. It had a nasty sound of unlubed metal. Went back to the Ford part and the noise went away.

Now I stick with OEM filter simply for the engineered flow characteristics, recognizing there could possibly be better filtration out there.

But I do spend whatever to get the best oil.

Edit - I drive a Silverado now, not an F150.
