what to use to reseal headlights

Recommended Posts

hey guys so i baked my headlights and pulled them apart....i put them back together and i clearly have condensation inside of them i could not find any proper sealant to seal them with....got any ideas on what i can pick up at a local homedepot ? any home reno store etc.? i need something to seal the groves when i slide it back in...and also the visible part on the outside of the headlight. I'm thinking i need something like rubber putty that hardens ? just don't know the names of these things. But looking forward to your responses! thankyou! and ill be taking pictures of what i did! :)

I know most retrofitters use butyl rubber sealant and you put it in the grooves and bake it to make it seal and harden. You can find it on retrofitlab.com Also hope you have some pictures of the lights apart because I am looking to put a halo kit in mine. Also please share how long you baked them for and what temperature if you don't mind. Hope this helps

I use this stuff and love it. Sticks great. Used it on my personal headlights and haven't had a single issue with them I cut mine open.

I know some retrofitters use silicone. It can be easier to reopen a silicone headlight cause you can just cut the silicone instead of having to bake the butyl. To each his own. I just find silicone can be really messy when working with it

In the past I have used marine Goop. Its like a silicone, but much tougher when it dries. I have lights that were cut apart 11 years ago and they still are sealed. Goop has numerous types such as "household, plumbers, etc..."

yeah my only issue with my headlights is im having troubles putting them back together? like when u bake them the plastic gets all warped up it just looks horrible from the baking process then you have to rip them apart then it looks 10x worse. so i need a sealant and also something to help hold them TOGETHER . im going to dremel around to get rid of some residue also.

Cut them open and use silicone or OCI rubber butyl to reseal

Use butyl rubber like mentioned above for windshields. Silcone can offgas and discolor the inside of your lense when it cures. This is why TRS and HID Planet recommend butyl rubber. It's also easier to open the headlights back up if there is an issue.
