Cruise Control?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to install crusie on my 99 gmc EXt truck.   This truck did not come with it.   I have found a few of them, audiovox makes a good one I heard, but it's this square you mount somewhere in the cab, not on the turn signal.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?   Or know of one that will mount on the turn siganl to look close to OEM as possible.  The Ziebart in town, has one, but they can only install it , and would be $450.    where the audiovox one is $85.

I tried the dealership, but they no longer will sell the cruise control kits.

I installed the audiovox on my 01 s-10 last fall, and love it.  I actully wanted one that did not tie into the turn signal, as I did not want to mess with that.  It has all the feature, acc, coast, resumes, etc. and is very reliable, plus it is very sensity to the brake pedal shut off, unlike some of the factory ones where you have to hit the prakes pretty hard.

The install took me three evenings to do, as I wanted it to be perfect.  The first night I installed all the underhood portions and got the cable in place.  the second night I hooked up the under hood electronics and vacuum and fed the wires through to the cab.  The third night I hooked up the in cab wires.

I installed the controls on my center console where they are nice and handy.

If you go this route, check on-line to find the correct wire locations, as the directions I got with mine were a couple of years old, and one of the locations had changed.

Overall, it is a good kit, but you have to dosome work to install it.

Thanks for the information.

Are the instructions pretty straight-forward?  besides the wire location you mention.   I know this ties into the VSS, does this connect at the sensor on the transmission, and is it the sending or returning side of the sensor?

My father in law put one on his RV about 6 yrs ago before I knew him, he said there pretty easy, the hardest part was setting up the cable to the throttle

Yes, the instructions were pretty straight forward, including referencing where the wires are and the colors.  In my case, the VSS had moved, so that is what I had to find.

Do a search on cruise control instructions, and you should find some websites where you type in the model and year, snd it will give you all the exact locations.

The cable was easy to install, as was the controls, but hooking up to the brake wire under the dash was tough, as the space is so tight under the column.

No connection near the transmission, everythign is under the hood, or in the cab.

  • 5 weeks later...

Just installed this over the weekend with help from father-in-law. Was very simple to due. The hardest part was finding the darn wire for the negative side of coil. Finally found that. Would have took about 1 hr if that information was on hand,(left manual at home :chevy: )

Works great!!! best $102 I've spend in a long time!

IT was the one at Autozone by Audiovox CSS-100. It was $102 with tax here in IL

The only thing I dont like about it is, When you hit your brake, it shuts off the cruise , but it doesn't turn off the computer part(square controller in the cab). so if you hit the set button, it resumes to the last speed used unless you remember to turn the controller off. But that is not a big deal at all!

I installed the AudioVox one on my 93 Sonoma and loved it. I was able to get it from Auto Zone for $80 with a friends employee discount. It was easy to install and worked great the entire time I had the truck with no problems. It was easy to mount and took me about 2 hours to install. You will love it.
