USAA Insurance Rates for NON Military?

I'm looking to set up a new membership with USAA via my Dad (he served in the Guards). Specifically, I wanted it to have for the $750 discount on new vehicles (buying two, likely) and then I was going to delve into the insurance services to see if I could fare better with them than with the more commonplace stuff.

I've learned a few things about the whole process, and am now wondering if I'm going to bother doing it at all because I've managed to secure one Private Offer already (negates the USAA discount) and am working hard to get a second one. Here's what I've learned so far:

- In order for me to become a member, not having served in the military myself, I need to have my Dad join first and then identify me as a member candidate. I can then call up and join.

- In order for my Dad to be able to identify me (or any direct family member), he needs to A) Become a member himself and B) Purchase an insurance product. It's quite probable that the total cost of the policy he would need to buy would be around $30 for a year's coverage on a small amount of jewelry. I would be ultimately covering the cost of this, because -I'M- the one that wants the membership.

- USAA absolutely WILL NOT provide you with any sort of quote on insurance without being a member first.

- Insurance premiums are determined by length of time served and the rank achieved. Not having served, I won't be eligible for any of the premium discounts and such and would pay whatever the "standard" rate is.

So, it's totally a "pay-to-play" scenario for me, and I have no idea if I will WANT to play after having paid.

So, here's what I would like to understand:

Is there anyone out there that is A) a USAA member, B) is/was not a member of the military, and C) has at least gotten quotes from USAA on auto or home insurance and compared it against their existing policy provided from another company?

Was the coverage worse, equal, or better from USAA? Was the premium less, equal, or more than your other policy? How much different?

Do they provide multi-policy / multi-vehicle discounts like other companies do?

Did you end up purchasing the policy? Do you get the bi-annual rebate checks like a military member would / does?

Join the Farm Bureau for $100, wait 2 months, get $500 discount. That is on top of all other discounts.

Actually, you need only be a member for 30 days. And it isn't helpful to me as I'm looking to buy NOW, -before- the current rebates (and available vehicles) go away.

This doesn't address what I'm interested in, though. I'm not looking for auto discounts - I want to understand the pricing on USAA insurance at their "stock rate".

Chris - You raise an interesting point.

I don't believe it matters whether you're a little old lady or a stunt driver (in terms of your record) because I'm more looking for a general comparison of USAA versus "the rest of the world". I suppose that some situations might have some differences in how they work out...

The biggest thing, I'm guessing, is whether or not the member served since that seems to play directly into the premium.

Area/geography, type of vehicle, driving records, past claims, "license points"... I don't believe any of that will really factor in to this. It would seemingly all boil down to what does USAA want for money compared to what everyone else wants for money to insure you. It's the difference that matters.

If you are also looking at other underwriters, check out the Costco website. If you go to "services", there's a link to insurance. You can get an online quote. We use them for the cars and house.

Also i will add, i did serve as i mentioned. I dod 3.5 years and got out as E-3. I did receive an honorable. USAA provided no additional doscount to what i have with Nationwide. I think it was like $2 cheaper a month to go to USAA but not worth switching. All my banking is done through USAA though.

Thanks, Chris. This is the sort of information I was looking for. "All things being equal, there's no real savings to USAA insurance" is what you seem to be saying. And, by all things being equal, I mean that USAA isn't going to provide me any special discounts since I never served. So, their rates are going to be the same for me as pretty much anyone else except that I can continue to take advantage of having an agent shop my policies for me periodically against the other carriers where there's competition in the market.

For what it's worth: I've managed to secure two private offers which supercede the USAA rebates / discounts anyhow. So, this seems now to likely be a dead issue for me. Others may benefit from the information, however.

  • 5 months later...

I have usaa previously had State Farm i saved like almost 100$ though I'm active duty Air Force, e-4 6 years in. I do all my banking through them as well, best insurance I've ever had. I've been in 2 accidents one was I hydroplaned off the highway no one else involved, didn't charge me my deductible and rates didn't go up. The first one I was t boned and the guy tried saying it was my fault, they went to bat for me and I won. I've had absolutely no issues I've always used their car buying programed it did save me about 500$
