04 Silverado 2500 serious metallic grinding on acceleration

Recommended Posts

My 04 2500 is making a loud metallic grinding noise on acceleration...even during light controlled acceleration it's very loud. The noise is best described as similar to a metal lathe sound. I have a video of the noise itself but can't seem to attach it here. I've also noticed an amount of grease and what appears to be rubber debris from the aft portion of the transmission where the slip yoke sits. I'm not a mechanic I've done very moderate repairs so far so any help is necessary. Of course I'm on a tight budget so I can't just take it in to be fixed. Thanks in advance!

First thing I'd check is to jack the front up to check the hub bearings. They are known to fail. You grab your tire at the 12 & 6 o'clock positions and shake the tire, should be zero play. Then the 3 & 9 and shake to check for possible tie rod and/or pitman/idler arm problems. May be easier for someone else to shake the tire while you look at all the steering components for play. Again, should be no play.

As for your trans, do you see fluid on anything? Try to push up on the rear drive shaft where it goes into the transmission (or transfer case for 4wd). Is there any play? Does that cause fluid to leak out?
