6.2L Engine (L86) - Material Stop Constraint

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I'm configuring an order for a 2015 Silverado and my dealer is telling me that there is a constraint on the 6.2L engine. He said it is on "Material Stop" and can not presently be ordered. He said there was no further information available on the situation or when the constraint might be lifted. A rep from the Chevrolet website verified this information and also couldn't tell me anything more. I wanted to ask if anyone could shed any light on this, as I would like that engine and the deadline for ordering a 2015 is not far off. Thanks for any information you can offer.

That may mean that they are not producing any more 6.2L trucks for 2015. GM probably has a quota of 6.2L engines to try to protect their CAFE ratings for the model year. Just a guess on my part, but I may be right for once. Also being this late in the model year, there may be a whole bunch of options that start going on constraint due to the model year changeover.

Try ordering a Yukon Denali or Escalade and see what happens. It's the same engine. If that order works, then it's likely a CAFE thing. If it won't go through, then it's truly a part problem.

If it is a CAFE thing then the SUV will be on constraint as well, all vehicles a manufacture produce are now included in the CAFE figure. They don't exempt out the trucks and SUV's anymore.

Yes and no. You're right that CAFE considers all vehicles, but GM has put restraints on the trucks before to satisfy SUV demand. When there's no 6.2 for the trucks, buyers go for 5.3 or 2500. When there's no 6.2 for the Escalade or Yukon Denali, there's no sale at all. And those SUVs can also easily pass $80k while the trucks float around $50k. Lots of things to consider.

CAFE goes by model year (not calendar). The 2016 SUV's are already in transit, local dealer has 2 GMC's, a Denali and Yukon SLT a week out he says.

Plus GM wont short a Corvette an engine either, so I bet it goes Corvette<SUV<Truck in regards to production allotment.

I put in an order the same day as OP, Thursday 8/5/15, and was told there was no constraint on the 6.2 engine. The GM of the dealership also told me something to the effect that there would be at least 600 more 6.2 trucks built this year. I checked back again today (Saturday 8/8) and was told that no, there is definitely no constraint.

Not sure what's up with that. But GM has not officially accepted the order yet, so I guess anything could still happen.

Yeah, and now they're putting them in Camaros as well. Any parts shortages (pistons, cranks, heads, etc) and you can guarantee the trucks are going to be last in line. People will still buy the 5.3's.

Greetings Tehfade,

Thanks for this information. I spoke directly to Chevrolet the day after my original post, and they confirmed that the constraint was in effect. They said it was due to a supplier issue and was expected to be lifted in early September. Have you learned anything more since placing your order? Has GM accepted your order with the 6.2L engine yet? Thanks for any more details you might be able to offer.

I haven't heard anything else. The dealer told me it could be as long as until next Monday before my order was accepted or not. How did you get in touch with Chevrolet?

I had been talking to dealers for about a month before I put that order in though. Every last one had a different story about when and if they could make a factory order. How late in the year did your dealer say they could order a 2015? Because if mine is to be believed, my truck is coming out of their "last allocation", so this worries me a bit.

Hi Again Tehfade,

Thanks for getting back to me. I was told by Chevrolet that 2015 models will be produced until 10/02/15 and 2016 production will begin on 10/04. They also told me that 2015 models can be ordered until "2 or 3 weeks before production ends". I asked them, but they did not give me an exact date. If this information is accurate, I would assume an order placed through early September would be fulfilled. Considering that they told me the 6.2L engine would resume availability around the same time, it is cutting things uncomfortably close. You could hypothetically place an order with the 5.3L for now to get it into the system, with the intention of modifying the order when the 6.2L became available, however, you would run the risk of it actually being built with the 5.3L. In any case, please keep me informed as you learn more about the status of your order. Thanks again for the update.

Note a constraint means they are rationing the option, does not means it's completely held up. So some are going to go through, its just depends on how many are ordered vs. how many they can build with the limited number of parts available. Some dealers have more pull with orders than others, its called allocations.

I was told it is a "Material Stop" constraint, does that still mean that some are going through? If so, would it make sense to try placing the order through another dealer?
