Shocks on a Max Tow Package

Recommended Posts

So I understand with the 2015 max tow package on a 1/2 ton 4x4 that the shocks are called out on the build sheet as ''revised shock tuning". That along with heavier duty springs, etc, etc. make the max tow package. My question is specific to the shocks. If one ever had to replace shocks on the rear.....what do you specifically ask for (or look for) when you're about to get new ones. Is the travel different on these, etc. Is that of concern if you put an additional 1" lift in the rear with different blocks.

I never really was concerned with this on my other trucks....but if these shocks are truly different....do you need to specify travel etc. when looking for new ones...

When I didn't have a max tow package truck...I just bought Bilstein 5100 and called it a day and never had a problem with overextension since the block addition was so mild. Just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something being the max tow pkg shocks may be a different beast????

Thanks in advance.

The max tow pkg came with a heavier load capacity rear leaf spring on the GMT900. The front Springs were standard. When a spring rate is increased, the damping rate should be increased to provide the same level.of control. That's a generalization. In the real.world, shock makers have progressive rates and compression vs extension rates to play with and mix. I found the 5100 rears to be better riding than the stock shocks on my Gmt900 Maxtow.

All you need to do is have the VIN if you want OEM shocks from a dealership. Websites like Rock Auto actually list the RPO code for the AcDelco shocks & what suspension option they are used with. The weight capacity comes from the heavier duty leaf springs.

If you go aftermarket, Bilstein 4600 would be the correct choice. As for lifting the rear 1" or higher, just order the shocks for the amount of lift you choose. After lifting, OEM's are only an option with the use of rear shock extensions.

I run 3" rear blocks on both my GMT-900's and Ready Lift extensions without issue. Using the extension allows me to keep OEM length shocks and allows for several options.
