Be Careful Out There

Spurshot

If you're expecting government to take care of you, you'll have a big surprise if you come around this corner. It's in Apple Valley CA at the corner of Apple Valley Road and Tuscola Road. I took this picture a few hours ago. Project planning seems to be a bit more challenging for this town than they can handle.

Finally.. A town that will step in to provide the night-time illumination we need in the Sierras for taking corners! This is definitely going to make cornering at night easier since our stock lights don't throw an light onto the shoulder.

A little history about this corner. Up until about 10 years ago, that pole was right up into the corner where the new black asphalt meets the old asphalt. They moved it back after it had been hit/scraped up a lot of times. This past week, they were putting in curbs and widened the street as you can see by the asphalt lines. Somebody forgot to get the pole moved first.

Lack of coordination by the different public departments is pretty common. That's why the water department doesn't come to do mains work on your street until just after it has been freshly paved.

Obviously city council didn't factor in the money to move the pole, the paver can't be that stupid. Give the paver credit though, he did a good job paving around the pole.

Whoever was involved with this can have all the credit for this they want.

You guys have no clue.

That's how you make potholes!

Cut and remove the asphalt around the pole.

Remove the pole.

Back fill with dirt and smear cold asphalt on top.

But do not compact the dirt. Cars, buses and semis will take care of it. Of course to the expense of the cars suspension and the car owners pocket.

After 6 month or so replace the temporary asphalt (or what's left) and pave it with normal asphalt.

But do not use bitumen expansion strips.

Wait for the next winter.

so long

See them do this type of thing several times while a road corner is being improved being the corner must be illuminated

while still in use then the pole will be set back. I don't know I would think move the pole first where the plans have it then improve the corner. Also some has to do with the utility company not being able to get to the pole while the road crew has to complete the job under time issues.

The power company should have come out and disconnected the street light at the power pole outside of the picture, then removed the pole before the project started. This is a street light. Not a power pole.

Another classic 'not my job'

That could be union induced. I'm completely serious, if you have worked at a place with multiple conflicting unions you will know. Really woulnt be surpised if the guy was worried about the "shovel union" going bat crap crazy a "painter union" cleaned up roadkill. I've seen union fights over miniscle stuff that amounted to a minute of work.
