Those ford ecoboost's....

No matter how tough the components in this engine are I would never buy a used and tuned Ecoboost.

It's just my opinion (or gut feeling) but I think that those Ecoboost engines are already maxed out.

Not in the meaning of hp but of longevity.

Yea. A used one wouldnt be so bad, but if i saw one with even a CAI or cat-back i would run. Stuff like that i wouldnt buy if it had been molested. They are trying to get too much power from these small engines.

They also spend some time in the shop too. Everyone I know 4-5 with an eco boost has had at least one service visit due to various engine issues

I'm with you. Turbo motors are a lot less forgiving when it comes to tuning.

Gimmie' an old school pushrod V8 any day of the week. They will still be running long after we're all six feet under. Now the jury is still out on V V T, and AFM, but its kinda' hard to argue with 11:1 , 11.5:1 compression on pump gas. Back 15 or 20 years ago I used to spend big $$$$$ for alloy heads and blocks. Now you don't even give it a second thought as they are std equipment. But if I am being honest I do miss my 7:1 compression, long duration- high lift cam, port matching my square port BB heads to the blower manifold with that sweet, sweet sound and whine of the straight cut gears and whistle of my tight tolerance teflon strip 8-71 Littlefield iron lung sitting on top of a solid cam 427. BUT!! I do NOT miss having to change the pills (jets) on a daily basis for the mechanical Enderle fuel injection. You would have to swap pill size to allow for more or less fuel to go thru the return line and back to the fuel cell. Talk about throttle response! LOL. But you damn near needed to be a meteorologist to be able to tune that thing correctly. Seem to me that those little Ecoboost's are probably under a lot of stress. Of course even I admit no one wants a big bird catcher sticking out of the hood these days but there are still the Procharger style or turbos. Bolt one of those puppys on a moderate V8 and you wouldn't even have to spin it above 4500-5000 rpm. Purr like kitten and destroy "ECO anything".

This is MY idea of "ecoBOOST" Well...the boost part anyway LOL :driving:

So I have a new Expedition with the 3.5 EB this week. I need to spend more time with it when I'm more awake (today sucked, never fly Delta) but as of now I'm not blown away by it. Doesn't feel any stronger than the F150 I drove early this year. At least it doesn't appear to pipe in fake sound.

We have been having quite the discussion here at work. One co-worker has a RAM with a tune and the basic bolt ons (CAI, Catback etc), one with an Eco with 22psi boost and straight exhaust and me in my box stock 6.2....Well, until I get the InTune tomorrow. The Eco has already outrun the RAM (it wasn't too bad)....Now the RAM wants me...lol.

BTW, the Eco gets driven hard.....has 80k miles on it and it's never been in the shop for anything but mods. Oh.......He hates his transmission too!

i lost money on that truck and loved most everything about it, except the powertrain choice i made....

This coming from a life long GM owner and folks worked for GM at the Tech center.

Ford is really pushing the issue with these little engines. My guess is they are not going to last very long putting out the power numbers they have. It's ok to push a race engine to the limits because they get rebuilt a few times a year but these little turbo charged daily drivers are not going to last. I hope Ford is ready to replace all of them under warranty in a few years because they will not last.

I had the pleasure of driving an EcoBoost F150, we now have 7 of them at work and they are impressive. They feel strong but they sound horrible. Ford even plays V8 exhaust tones through the stereo speakers to give you the sound of driving a vehicle with a proper engine.

This has been my Dad's work horse since 2012. Bone stock, no catch can, and has towed more than I have ever had in my lifetime. It still runs great and its on its third set of Nitto Terra Grapplers. Fuel milage is a little down at around 16.5 but he still hooks up our 24' utility trailer and can haul materials with no problem.

The sound is subjective at best, while the exhaust tone isn't all that great, I think the sound of the turbo's spooling makes up for it. But I guess it has been a complaint since Ford is introducing fake engine sounds through the speakers on the new 2015's.
