Where did GM get the design for the diesel engine?

Just curious if the design for this engine is a totally new design or borrowed from another design?

Yes.

The Duramax is designed by both GM and Isuzu. I believe the design is based on the Detroit diesel.

The 6.6L Duramax in the HD trucks was originally designed by Isuzu and GM. The LMM (2007.5) and newer Duramax motors are pretty much entirely done by GM. The Duramax design is NOT based on the 6.5L Detroit that was in the C/K trucks of the 90's.

 

The 2.8 Duramax that is going in the Colorado/Canyon is a GM engine.

 

The 7.8L Inline 6 Duramax in the old 6500/7500/8500 trucks was entirely Isuzu and is no longer produced.

I just understood that Detroit diesel plays some role in it. But, form me saying "I believe" I obviously wasn't sure, just I've had numerous people say that it's a similar design or something to the Detroit Diesel.

VM Motori makes the engine. GM used to own 50% of the company from 2003 to 2013 when they sold their share to Fiat FCA.

 

VM Motori is the same company that produces the 3.0 EcoDiesel for Ram. Same applies for the Cruze Diesel. The 2.0 is made by VM Motori for GM.

The 2.0 is made by Fiat but the 2.8 is made by GM in Thailand, it shares some history with the 2.8 from VM but has a new block and has been through a complete redesign.

Agreed. GM used the VM 2.8L diesel as it's base platform. Same with the 2.5L VM diesel. GM has had these diesels in their overseas stuff since 2011. As was stated, they owned 50% of VM till 2013. The motor was already in place. We are getting just the updated version. I have owned the 2.8L VM in the past, and it is a very solid, reliable motor. Cast iron block, wet sleeved, DOHC, variable geometry turbo, common rail. A lot of these from VM have been used worldwide in autos, pickups, boats. One of the smartest moves GM made was taking the design and building upon it. Would have been a total waste of R&D time to reinvent a inline 4 cylinder diesel when there was one sitting in their lap already.

 

Doesn't make sense GM would use a new design block. Not sure there is much can be improved on the wet sleeve design that the VM used. Maybe materials, like compacted graphite iron as opposed to cast iron might be in play.

I have a 2.0L Cruze Turbo Diesel. Engine was jointly designed by GM Powertrain and Fiat in Turin, Italy. It is manufactured in Germany. I have put 15k on my CTD, and it has been great so far. The 2.0 is a strong running engine, smooth, quiet, and gets great mileage.

 

I hope GM wises up and puts a diesel in their 1/2 tons.

Yeah, the old naturally aspirated diesels that GM offered in the late 70's thru the 80's really screwed things up for the diesel market in America. We should have had the same diesel offerings in virtually every vehicle as they have outside the U.S all these years. The old smoke generating U.S. diesels turned the public off to diesels and the fired up the EPA to pile on the emissions stuff. We are where we should have been a couple of decades ago. This catch up thing is stupid. We should have had diesel offerings in every model of the pickup line for years. And every car for that matter!

GM has a diesel in the plans for their 1500, as does Ford. Pay attention in 18 for ford and 19 for GM.

In general, I could deal with only the SCR/DEF and DPF stuff. That is all downstream of the motor. It is the awful EGR nonsense that makes the motor eat it's own feces that really messes things up. One thing to have EGR on a gasser, but totally stupid to do so with a diesel.
