FYI Ploy to get you to buy likely BS insurance

As some of you know, I bought a used '13 Silverado and got this little gem in the mail today.

I'm not gonna say it rises to the level of a scam, but I can see lots of people getting suckered into this.

No company name, no website, etc. They are clearly trying to make it look like an "official" GM notice. It's sad, really. Has anybody elge gotten this recently?c46cf871-ff92-4a69-84d7-74db67d645a7.jpg647aba32-6d43-4412-8249-60fb4492aa14.jpg

It's not trying to be a notice from GM, it's just a company looking to get you to sign up for an extended warranty which I don't think is worth it. Some people may think it's worth it if you use your personal vehicle to do a lot of traveling, but other than that it's worthless. Even then it needs to be with a reputable company.

I got one for my 09 GMC that I traded in back in January saying the same thing. It's pretty common to get these every so often.

I usually buy a new truck every 18 months / 2 years. I get something like this for probably the last 5 trucks all the time. Kinda' gets on your nerves. I wonder if anyone ever falls for this crap? Damn snake oil salesmen are everywhere.

This is very very very old. Not exactly a scam, really just bad extended warranty companies that are buying your info from GM/Dealer and trying to get you to buy their crap with sketchy marketing. Aka half of all business practices for any warranty or financial service. You'll get some kind of coverage, but probably nothing decent.

I get those for every car I've owned in the last five years even though I don't own them any more.

I have purchased an extended warranty on a car exactly once and I will NEVER do it again. I don't even like paying the few hundred additional dollars for a "Ceritified" used car... Extended warranties are a complete and utter scam. Take the money that you would be paying every month on a loan (or what you pony up in cash at purchase time), and put it into a specific bank account. Every time you spend money on an extended warranty, just keep putting that money into that account. When you actually have an issue that a warranty would cover, pay your deductible out of your regular bank account like you would if you had the warranty and pay the rest from your "warranty account."

You'll have a nice chunk of money available to you that will just continue to build over time... Especially if you're like me and chew through vehicles at a rate of one every 1-2 years.

And what's this crap that the extended warranty companies pro-rate a refund on the warranty, reverting back to ZERO miles, if you cancel it before it's expired? They weren't covering anything from mile zero, so why are they going back to then? They should be required by law to have to pro-rate a refund based on whether or not you are actually IN the extended warranty period when you cancel (let them collect a modest cancelation fee, $75), and they can only pro-rate bewteen when the extended warranty started and when it would end.

I get them as well. My wife was getting phone calls too. We told them not to call back anymore several times. I have not received a phone call in a couple weeks but hope they actually leave us alone. It gets rather annoying with the phone calls almost a couple a week

If people didn't buy them they'd be out of business, so yes, people buy them.

I chewed out a dealer when I got them for my wife's 2 year old Jeep. The dealer claimed they did not give out my info, these 'companies' get your info from local DMV.

I can not say an ext warranty is never a good thing. If you keep your vehicle long enough and/or do enough miles it can be good. For me I've probably broken even with my last 3 or 4 vehicles. I got a new transmission, heads, and several other repairs on one van alone back when I was doing field service; I'd avg 50k miles a year. I'd buy something with 30k miles or so, get the ext warranty and be good to 100k or more. It helps if you have a good relationship with your dealer and failures just happen to occur towards the end of the contract.

I would never buy one that was not backed by the manufacturer though.
