Sweet truck!

I'm interested in your wrap for your boards! Custom made? How are the holding up? I wrap all my snowmobiles sure helps with tree riding in the mountains. The 3m wrap is tough stuff never thought of putting it on running boards. I like it! Would you mind pm me a few pics of it?

Thanks

Thanks for the compliment. They have been wrapped for a year now and no issues at all. I do of course use a chemical n them after each wash to blacken the carbon and protect it. The real truck is to keep people from stepping directly on it. Not that it will tear or anything, but to ensure that it stays free of scuffs and such. I just tell them step on the plastic and not the carbon.....my own OCD. Plus with the coating on it, if it's wet, they will definitely slip if they step on the carbon.

I did it because I wanted to color match grim with other carbon on the truck that I wrapped. Just tried to balance it. Plus, the fact I haven't seen anyone else with it done like that. I was going to do the roof, and then changed my mind thinking it would be a tad bit too "carbony"...new word....I still have a few things I want to carbon, but they are items that are out of immediate view. My sub enclosure/amp rack when finished will match carbon accenting and black leather/vinyl.

The real trick to doing it right is to have a long sheet of 1080 carbon to work with, and cut it longwise in order to match the grain. I say this because I see too many people do it with carbon patterns that are all going the same direction or backwards rather than opposing or mirrored. My external and internal carbon work is opposing. I started with a sheet of carbon that was approx 96 inches long by 60 inches wide. Like I said I was planning to do my roof as well, now I just have enough to redo the boards a couple more time if needed. It's a chunk cost wise, but each board only has 1 seam.

So following my technique you need:

3M 1080 carbon sheet at least as long as the running board.

Vinyl cutting tape (the kind with dental floss like twine running through it)

3M seam sealer or clear nail polish

3M prep

Heat gun

First, remove the running boards, and break them down until you only have the main portion of the board (all plastic removed). Thoroughly clean the metal and apply prep to it to make it a bit tacky. Do one at a time so as to not collect dust.

Once the prep has had a little time to dry, use the cutting tape and run a strip of it on the bottom side of the running board. The tape should be a bit longer on each end and as straight as possible. The excess on the end needs to extend beyond the outer edge of your carbon so you can cut the seam before wrapping the ends.

Next remove the backing from the carbon sheet and lay the running board upside down onto the sheet in such a manner as to ensure it overlaps on the underside and is over the cutting tape. It helps to have two people when position and help wrapping. Start at one edge and begin wrapping using the heat gun to help get that perfect stretch and remove all bubbles. The 1080 I have has the built in perforation to let air escape, and I still had to use heat to get some air out.

Once you have all the flat surfaces covered and wrapped and no air bubbles, get one end of the cutting tape and expose the cord. Cut the overlap, seam with the cord, and carefully remove the tape residue. Then use the heat gun to finish the seal and remove any air around it. Once that is done, cut the ends shorter and wrap the ends into the running board being careful not to cut it on the metal edges. For the holes where the plastic parts fit, I simply cut a hole and left most of the wrap there in order to make for a tight fitting.

At this point you can put the board back together, and before mounting on the truck again, use the seam sealer or nail polish to seal the seam you made with the cutting edge. I applied it neatly but liberally in order to make sure it didn't start coming up, because if it does it will allow water, air, or contamination to start under the wrap and eventually ruin it.

Then it's time to do the other side. After both sides are done, I let it sit out in the sun for at least a day letting it form itself, then I initialiy coated it with zymol titanium and adams paint sealer. To keep it looking new I just use that mcguires back to black I think it's called.

Damn that truck looks good. Great thread too, with all the details you've provided.

And I can honestly say, beyond the obvious stuff, your truck has many small details that really pull everything together.

Nice!

Thanks Chad! Means alot. I am a very detail oriented person, so I try my best to convey that. The audio system I am working on will show everyone how OCD I can be. lol

Here is a sneak peak of the work in progress. Speaker baffles for Hertz HSK-163 Hi-Energy. The beginning of a much more complicated mounting system. More to follow as it gets done.

Your truck looks amazing, man. Makes me wish I went blacked out instead of more chrome.

Thanks!

Just thought the truck had too much chrome, and as it started coming off it kept looking better to me, so I kept on going. What I never could understand is why you order a black interior and end up with black on the bottom and grey on the top....in the end the headliner is going to stay grey, I have no plans of dealing with that mess.

More to come....

My friend Kyle Golden asked me to share his build, so I am. He is doing fab work for my Audio build and does the cleanest work I have ever seen. Here is a link to the formal post I made earlier, and his Facebook album. He just finished his truck for the 2015 Installer of the Year Awards in Dallas last week. He again placed in the top 12 in the country.

Truck looks awesome. I like the color match grill. What's your opinion about paint chip in respect to the grill? I had the "Cilajet" applied to my truck so paint chips don't have that big of an impact.

Not quite sure what "Cilajet" is, but I put at least 10 coats on the grill and it is hard as a rock. I have 2 chips right now, and covered it up with touch up paint. Not noticeable at all. That's from people who cut over into your lane after passing without thinking about the "GDam'd 2-second rule"...they are lucky I have a little patience! And a round not in the chamber!

No, the exhaust is the GM Performance Borla Exhaust.

He is in Springfield, IL.....not Dallas.

http://www.cilajet.com pretty awesome stuff so far. And yes, I realized it was IL after I read the thread about the sound system build. Was your stock muffler the single pipe to begin with?
