Rear-facing car seat in Double Cab?

Recommended Posts

My 2014 Double Cab. My daughter rides rear facing in a Cosco Scenera Next, she is 1yr old and weighs 20lbs, don't remember height. The Scenera seat is the most shallow seat currently made and is typically only bought for those with limited rear space. After much research at www.Car-seat.org that's what I went with. When she was in a infant seat with base, she most defiantly had to have her seat in the middle position. Was a big pain in the ass getting seat in and out due to grab handles Yes the passenger front seat has to be moved forward some, but my wife at 5'5" has no problem being comfortable. We typically drive her 2012 Grand cherokee anyway.

My son is 2.5 and rides in his Cosco Harnessed High back booster. He has no problem with leg room. I have made no sacrifice with my seat adjustment. I am still in my normal everyday position.

My truck is a lease and yes the price of a crew cab was an extra $100/mo at the time. So it wasn't in the budget and felt like a rip off. But I will be going with a full crew cab next time around

Thank you for the pictures, this is very helpful! I'm still torn as to what I'll wind up doing, but it's great to see that people are making it work either way.

Had this same challenge last Nov. Decided to go 2014 CC since the DC didn't allow my full size Graco car seat to flex back and forth like it is designed to do.

Per the fire dept. that taught me how to install the car seat, there needs to room for the car seat to rock back and forth in the case of a hard stop or an accident. Apparently it will reduce the force on my child. The flex of the seat will absorb most of the force instead.

The DC could of worked if I scooted my seat way forward, but being +6 ft tall isnt something I want to do.

Here's a pick of it installed in my CC http://imgur.com/guB7IFu

Another point to ponder is the fact that while most states only require a child to be rear facing until age one, that does mean that you have to spin them around on their first birthday. I think everyone agrees that a child's safety is the most important factor. My wife is a surgical tech working exclusively with neuro surgeons. Most of their cases involve spinal injuries. ALL of the spin and neuro surgeons asked recommend keeping a child rear facing until two years old.

The purpose of rear facing is to reduce the whiplash effect during a collision. Simply put, even after 12 months, a child does not have the neck strength to provide enough compensation to prevent neck injuries caused by whiplash. So even though my son will turn one in a couple of weeks, we will continue to keep his car seats rear facing for the foreseeable future in both my CC and her Pathfinder.

This was one of the reasons that I went with the Crew Cab model.

American Assoc. of Pediatrics found long ago a child's spine isn't 100% full developed until about 4yrs old. Car seat technology has come a long a way to accommodate kids as long as possible is rear facing

Above link shows how big your child can be and still rear face.

Crew Cab is my recommendation. I could only see buying a double cab if you needed the size savings to fit in your garage. But then again we're all different. I couldn't see spending a lot of money on a new truck and not having the most comfortable interior.

  • 3 weeks later...

I wouldn't have got a new truck last year if I had went with the CC the 1st time.

The double cab is not enough space for the kids. I have two of them and as they grow the space will get smaller and smaller.

Go with the Crew if you can swing it. You your kids will thank you down the road!

I own a double cab with a 2 and 5 year old. Had a supercab before, never had an issue. Wifes van is family, truck is occasional family mover(done three hours a few times). I would take a tahoe/suburban over crew cab for family use

I looked into that Tahoe LTZ. I almost passed out with that sticker price. 65K.

I'm going to do a little bit more saving up to go in deep with the Yukon Denali XL so I can get a 6.2 engine. 79K with all options!!

I had an 03 frontier prior to the Sierra. It was a crew cab. I have two kids It looked to me like the double cab sierra was smaller than the Frontier and a big part of the reason I got rid of the frontier was kid space. You might be able to safely fit a rear facing car seat in a double cab. I learned my lesson and got a crew cab. My son is 4 and my daughter is 2. My daughter has been forward facing for about 6 months.

I would get a crew cab short bed before I got a dbl cab standard bed for my kids comfort. My wife has an Acadia and I dont have the kids very often but often enough to know they didnt have any room in the frontier and I wanted them to be comfortable.

SOOOO nice to not have kids :driving:

As I near 60 and see co workers my age trying to build decent retirement funds, after sacrificing all their adult lives for their kids and paying for expensive college educations, I don't miss any of it. My wife and I could retire now if we were to trim back. But we're not ready to make that step just yet
