Cell Phones and Older Trucks

So now that they have banned cell phones in vehicles in a few/many states.

What is the option for those with older vehicles?

OK, other then not using a cell phone.

I switch my commute every couple weeks from my 2014 GMC to our spare car, my wife's old 2001 I30 Infinity, mainly to keep it running. I have a conference call that falls during my commute most days. The old I30 has no phone interface. My wife and I had several visor devices. Some are still laying around somewhere. None were perfect. Difficulty hearing or being heard were always a problem at highway speeds.

I just ordered a Blue Parrot B350XT from Walmart for $99. http://www.walmart.com/ip/VXI-BlueParrott-B350XT-Bluetooth-Headset-with-Car-Charger-Wall-Charging-Cord/43350970

I have been using the Blue Parrot headset for a few years now. Works great and is noise canceling. A feature I need with my semi truck running down the road with the window down. Phone can be in the cab and I can be doing something outside on the truck and talking away on the headset. I can almost make it back to the end of the trailer before I lose contact with the phone. That is about 65 feet.

I let the cell phone link up with the pickup when I am in it, but I am not a fan of using that. it is ok, but not to my liking. Most times, even in the pickup, I don't answer the cell phone anyway. Even a lot of times at home on the weekend, as I rarely have my cell phone anywhere near me on the weekend if I am outside. Cell phones are nice tools, but I don't center my life around them. Anyone needs to talk to me when I am busy, they can leave a message. When I am driving, only a few numbers will I accept calls from. Everyone else has to leave a message. If they don't, I figure it wasn't important enough, so I don't return the call.

My truck has an AV jack for an iPod so I just hook that up to my phone and use the phone as a microphone and the stereo speakers take care of the rest.

I used the blue parrot today . Seemed to work great at highway speeds where the built-in cab mic picks up too much background noise.

Well, like I stated, I use mine in my semi truck running down the road. The wife cannot even tell if the truck is even running when she calls. Nor anyone else. I really like the noise canceling capability of the Blue Parrot. When I push the button on it and speak to get it to call from my contacts, it sometimes goofs up and states it is dialing a different contact or even playing a song from my iTunes library. I just push the button on the headset to kill that one, push again and wait for beep and try again. It usually gets it right the second time around. Phone can ride over in the passenger seat and I just do everything from the headset. And if I get out of the truck to unhook a trailer or something, I just keep the headset on and continue like nothing changed. Phone still in the passenger seat. Try that with an overhead blue tooth setup.

I have the overhead setup and this winter I noticed that once I started the truck, when I received a call the truck would answer the phone when I was in the house. I would actually accept the call on the cell phone but the truck would take over and I couldn't actually make the conversation while I was in the house as the truck had the bluetooth on. That's the only thing I didn't like about it, I could have shut the bluetooth off if I had thought about it when I started the truck but I didn't.
