Thanks for reminding me that I am older than dirt! Try 1969 for 43151F and Honor Grad, no less. Somebody tell me how I can still remember my AFSC, but don't remember if I put on clean ones this morning....

I suppose I should have been more clear with my utility locator comment. I meant any negligence or unknowns on their part could get someone hurt very badly. My point was if a utility is not marked and we don't know about it, you can't hand expose something you aren't aware of. Indiana 811 requires you to hand expose within 24" of a marked line and typically we are very conservative with that number because locates are almost never right. I'm very aware of responsibilities of a contractor, the owner, the utility companies, and the locating companies. Buries lines are not something to take lightly, safety of our friends, neighbors, and workers are priority number one on our jobs. A locator is only as good as his as-builts allow him to be.

Defintitely a team effort all the way around! I couldn't imagine the consequences that could happen if a locator mis-marked an area as being clear. Or was off by over 3-4'. Holy cripe that would be bad! That is probably why our company's standards state if we don't find the marked utility within 18" of the staking to call for a restake. Didn't know it could be different in other states.

Interesting in Indiana the caution zone is only 24" on each side, in Michigan it is 48". I thought the new(er) Miss Dig laws were actually adopted from a national level, but I guess not. I know Mi passed an updated version of the law(s) requiring all future underground facilities to be locatable with a tracer wire, including water and sewer.

While I haven't watched all the videos, probably a job I would not even consider is an iron worker on a bridge, like the Mighty Mac (Mackinac Bridge that connects the lower and upper peninsula of Michigan)! Building, repairing, maintaining, etc...
