Gonna order amsoil gear oil, diff fluid change

Recommended Posts

I'm going to replace my fluids and i have a couple questions. I'm going to run amsoil 75-90w severe gear oil front and rear axles. I read online that synthetic oil will cause the front breather to leak unless you upgrade from the white to black one, Is this true? According to GM i need 1.75 quarts for the front axle. Do i just fill it comes out the fill plug people say if i do then it'll all come out the breather hose. Now for the rear axle it calls for 2.41 quarts can i fill until it comes out of the fill plug, some people say it takes more than 2.41, an article says if you fill it to the top it will come out of where the driveshaft connects to the rear end. Not trying to over think this, just don't want oil leaks. How much fluid did you put in for each axle 1500. My front diff makes noise on occasion and I'm hoping amsoil will help quiet it

Same. On my 2013, as with all of my vehicle over the years from autos, jeeps, pickups, commercial trucks, I fill till at or just a hair below fill hole. Most times, just at the fill hole to where it start to run out and call it a day. I have never had any leak or problem doing this method. Getting ready to do my 2015 2500, as I always like to change out all factory driveline fluids early on and get the initial break in particles out of there.

If you are doing the Amsoil anyway, get their hand pump that fits on their quarts and gallons. It is really a handy device that makes the job much easier. Great for doing diffs and transfer case.

Can't speak to whether the Amsoil is going to quiet things down on your front diff. Only real time I have seen Amsoil truly make a change in how something operated was the 545 transmission behind the 2.8L diesel in my 2006 Jeep Liberty. It really cleaned up the shifts and overall operation of the trans. And I did that one early also, at less than 5000 miles.

I believe it's the other way around with the breather. You need to upgrade to the white if you have the black one. Something about the seal/o-ring on the black one is not compatible with synthetic.

Can somebody confirm?

Don't know anything about the breather issue but when I had my 1500...

I filled the front until full and then put the plug in. The rear, if I recall my manual for a 10 bolt axle, is suppose to something like 5/8" to 1-5/8" below the fill plug. It took about 2 quarts to fill either diff with a total of about 4 quarts.

I have not heard of any issues with synthetic gear lube for several years on any vehicle. Probably one somewhere. But I have been using synthetic gear lubes in every thing I own all of this century and have never had a problem.

Just checked my owners manual on my 2015 2500HD diff levels since I am doing them today. Yep, just like I have always done. Fill to the bottom of the fill hole. Same for the transfer case. The way I have done it since my first diff in the late 1960's.

Just took a look at the PDF manual on the 2013 1500 I had. Sure enough, fill to the bottom of the holes on everything. At least mine that had the 5.3L 4x4.
