Who uses the voice to get directions using a GPS on the go?

This weekend I was with a person who was using the voice as well as the screen to get places while using their GPS. He has the voice on all the time. This was a pain and broke into the radio music etc. and just gave me a headache. I never use the voice on my GPS and with Garmin split screens (exits), why do you need the voice telling you the same thing? Isn't the screen good enough? I don't see any need for voice if the GPS screen is properly place so that you can see it. It just tells me people who uses the voice on their GPS don't get out too much (outside their normal comfort area of travel).

I'm in the same boat as you. I never use voice. I'm always looking at the map as verification, so I don't need another voice. My wife does use it when she's driving however. She has difficulty reading maps sometimes, so the voice helps her know when and where she has to turn.

I use it sometimes: you're in a strange city, it's night, it's raining, there's heavy traffic. My eyesight is not that great. It makes sense to use it; you can keep your eyes on the road.

In most cities, if you slow down even 3 MPH trying to decide which lane to move to some punk who knows the area is crowding up on you blowing their horn if they sense you're hesitating for half a second. Using the voice feature in these situations quells any urge I might have to do a little herd-thinning.

That's all valid Singer-Man. I'm one of those weirdos that looks up the routes of where I'm going before I leave so I know what to expect. It drives my wife nuts because she says "That's what the GPS is for....it knows where its going!"

The voice part would be beneficial in a strange town.

How about when you take a wrong turn, and the voice keeps telling you to do a legal u-turn and want shut up.

That only happens when you have the women's voice on so you never forget to stop and ask for directions. I am surprise it also doesn't say "I told you so" at the same time. LOL.

I use it for heavy traffic situations, which is about the only time I use the gps anyway. Used it yesterday to go to a place I wasn't familiar with. I also used the voice programming to set it up on the fly. It took a couple tries on the voice programming. I'm not totally satisfied with that feature. Needs some work. There are times when I don't play a radio or other music when driving. Driving in Manhattan was one time. What a zoo! Like downtown L.A. with an eastern accent.

I use GPS -all- the time, and largely I don't even look at it except for ETA estimate and during the final few miles of the trip - I'm usually mostly familair with the rest of the route. So, I leave the output voice turned off.

In SOME scenarios, like when I'm going to be navigating a large city or something where I am definitely NOT familiar with the terrain, I will turn the voice on for that part. Otherwise, I just feel like I'm being nagged. :)

The voice program option sucks. Can't get the simple things right and the POI list is good for only McDonald's, which I don't do. Then if you look up an address on Google maps, you can read of the entire address and it gets that first try. "3279 applewood road, Okeechobee FL" you get make your selection. Try POI "Walgreens" you get pardon or did you say and it list something so wrong I'm instantly pissed off.

I keep the voice on most of the time for the simple fact that if i do have the gps on its because i do not know where i am going and am trying to make my best time there..

With that said, i do turn it down and watch the screen more than listen to it. If it want confirmation for my eyes it mute the radio for a couple sec. while it talks.

I always look up where I am going first. Then, I don't use the voice unless I am going on a trip where it is a long way between stops. The voice drives me insane. You should be able to pick a voice, like Homer Simpson or Yosemite Sam!
