Opinions on carpet vs vinyl floor

Recommended Posts

I bough a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Z71 4X4 and begged for vinyl flooring. I had vinyl flooring in my old trucks('70s and early '80s) and loved it. I could go to a muddy site to work and just jump into the truck with no worries. The floor cleaned up easily with a bucket of water and a rag. I could dress it up with some nice carpeted floor mats when my wife wanted to go out.

BTW, buy the full-sized floor mats that go up behind the accelerator. This way you don't have to worry about your floor mat trapping the accelerator pedal down to the floor by the short mat sliding into the pedal.

I had vinyl in my last truck and loved it. I would do that again if I saw it as an option. I guess weathertech will have to do, they sure beat the GMC mats I got.

Husky liners are far superior to WT. But I agree that if I was getting into the truck every day with muddy boots, I'd want the full vinyl floor. But since I use the truck more often for daily driving with wife and kid, I like that the carpet is in there.

Had them in my Colorado W/T. looked and felt cheap! Easy to wipe clean, but if you got boot load of mud or crap on them you can't just pull them out like a mat to clean them.

Yes, It would be more difficult to clean up boot loads of mud from a carpet of you don't have floor mats, but that would never happen.......because passengers get to choose whether they with their boots or just their boots would be riding in the bed.

I had vinyl floor covering in my previous Chevy trucks and I loved it. Easy to take care of and you really don't know the different once you put floor mats etc. Something you just forget about because it doesn't make too much difference. I saw a lot of the new Ford truck coming in with vinyl floor covering as well this past week on some of there upper trim levels. It might be coming we will all have to pay for carpeting (option) like we have to pay for different exterior colors especially on the GMC truck.

Personally i'm not crazy about vinyl flooring because I like to use mats and then the mats just slid around. With that said, if anyone is interested in selling me their carpet for a double cab shoot me a PM. Trading may be an option too! haha

Got a 16 double cab z71 with rubber, it is a no cost item but from what I see you will have to order it that way, no dealer stocks any Lt trucks with it. At least in my neck of the woods. Took two weeks from day of order to delivery, we are about 4 hours from the plant that builds them in Fort Wayne. Still put in a set of Husky Liners X-act Contour.

Love/hate with mats on rubber vs. Love/hate with heavy rubber mats on carpet since you get stuff around the mats hitting the carpet at some point. Rubber with lock-on mats is the way to go -- I am pretty sure one mfg. just started offering this.

For sure! I have the locks on mine, but the carpet flooring is the one that it locks too so it doesn't help my situation. Guess I'm gonna have to sell the truck or pay for carpet. Scared to price it though.

My last truck with rubber mats had a soft feel, like there was insulation or padding underneath. I didn't notice any noise coming from the floor area.

My Colorado WT had the rubber flooring. Looked cheap compared to rug but more suitable for utilitarian use. Once had to pull the doorplate and there is the same 1" sound insulation composed of compressed shredded jute/rag material found on models with rugs.

Sometimes a wet rug may be the only way of detecting a leak before it becomes a real problem.

A sealed rubber membrane with fiber sound insulation backing lead to a serious problem if the vehicle has a water leak! Wouldn't be a problem with '60 - '80s's era vehicles with mechanical switches and point to point wiring worst case being a rotted out floor pan, but modern vehicles have numerous wiring/ connectors/ sensors in the floor areas, rocker channels and under the seats which are highly susceptible to water damage. Many of the "buttons" on modern vehicles are not switches but send a resistance signal read by the ECU, BCU etc. which triggers relay switches to operate the equipment. Corrosion in the connectors caused by water damage can lead to real problems that are impossible to diagnose without special equipment. Case in point being my old Avalanche which developed multiple leaks in the door seals, windshield and sunroof drains. Every one of these water leaks was "invisible" because the leak(s) either traveled down the "A" and "B" pillars or down the front firewall directly into the insulation backing under the rug.....none appeared on the surface of the the rubber all weather mats. The only way I was able to detect if there was another leak was to see and feel the water squish through the rug surface. Had to pull back the rug, suck out another gallon or so of water, dry it out with a heater..(dealer never bothered to dry out the soaked insulation under the rug after "fixing" a leak)...and then take it to the dealer in about a month to find the next leak. By this time all the wiring connectors in the door channel and sensors under the seats were beginning to corrode......after the 5th leak was discovered at the end of warranty I just gave up and traded it. The point being, if the vehicle had rubber flooring, I never would have been aware of any new or continuing leaks until multiple electrical failures surfaced, the floor pan rotted out or the smell/health hazard from mold developed......problems similar to vehicles damaged in flood areas.

I found what I though was a great deal on weathertech front & rear over the hump mats but it said only for vinyl floor, what would the difference be in floor mats?

I would have to guess the factory vinyl floor doesn’t have the “nubs”(or whatever you want to call them) for the floor mats.

Love my WT rubber floor!!!!!

I'm a hunter and in and out of the woods and mud!!!!  Supper easy to clean and look clean!  I do have husky liners to catch a lot of the stuff that I can take out and hose off!  I despise carpet in vehicles and in my own house!  Carpet just hides dirt and nasty stuff!  Plus I have three kids under 13!!!!
