A little secret for cleaning leather seats and interior components

Recommended Posts

Having a somewhat compulsive disorder when it comes to keeping my vehicles cleaned/detailed, i learned a few years ago to use clorox wipes for cleaning auto seat leather as well as plastic & vinyl interior components. These cheap wipes work great for cleaning your upholstery and while they do contain a small amount of bleaching agents, it is not enough to damage you interior (or seats). They simply serve well to remove all oils and other surface contaminants, and will not harm the leather dyes.

This is helpful and serves to avoid over doing the application of leather treatments. Too much (leather treatment) is not a good thing as those products actually tend to seal the seating surfaces trapping both contaminants and preventing the fabric/leather from "breathing".

The advice I got and give is to treat your leather once per year and when doing so, use only the best product available, use them sparingly, and take your time to both apply it and wipe it down after it dries.

Using Clorox wipes, I maintain my seats as in a like new condition and it even helps to prevent creasing of the leather in areas which are prone to a lot of contact such as the edges of the front driver and passengers seats from climbing into and out of your trucks.

The wipes will also remove denim stains from seat leathers.

You;ll be happy you did (try them). It works great, won't damage your leather or vinyl seats nor the dyes in them. Use sparingly and do not over saturate the material/leather. They (wipes) work best when you apply and rub lightly. If your laden with denim stains it may take a few passes to get the stains out but they will come out. I tend to apply the wipes, get the seats wet, rub them (with the wipes) then come behind them with a clean white cotton towel. Repeat as necessary.

I keep a tube of the wipes under my back seat for when I clean the truck or in the event someone spills something.

I use lexol but only once or twice a year at most while I use the wipes every time I clean my interior. Lexol is one of the best leather treatments but as with all of them too much is not a good thing as over using it can actually result in blocking the fabrics poors and causing them to hold more dirt and debris.
