Wi-Fi Card

Recommended Posts

I would still like to know where it is located so that I can sign up for the free wifi through Autonet..

Did you purchase the autonet card? As I stated in my last 2 posts, the 4g lte from the factory is different than the 3rd party autonet card. He explains the install of the autonet card in the 5th post and part number on the 14th post.

So again the autonet card is different from the factory wifi that comes from gm through onstar/att

"Third-party Wi-Fi router suppliers, such as Autonet Mobile have partnered with some vehicle manufacturers to offer aftermarket hubs. Autonet's system combines an in-vehicle router, mobile software and cloud services to stream mobile apps. Autonet's router board connects to a vehicle's (controller area network) CAN bus and includes a 3G radio. However, the router runs over 3G and 2.5G cellular data networks, meaning its slower and has less bandwidth than 4G-LTE"

I gotcha.. Didn't realize the factory card only works with OnStar.. I was hoping that it was more like an unlocked phone that you can just switch providers on.. Thanks for your help!

I thought the same thing, that is why I did the research and found it they are different. Doubt I would pay the onstar prices, but I did do some speed tests in my trilal The 4g wifi was getting 12-13mbps which is pretty good.

I might consider a day purchase or certain fixed data amount purchase for camping with the family or road trips etc but the monthly plans are way too expensive

I got my wifi card installed finally. Found out that this was a pretty easy install..no cutting of any wiring or anything..its a direct hookup, i bought my wifi card off of ebay for like $60 bucks. The dealer wanted $535 for the card and $400 in labor to install it. I dont get why they want so much in labor. Anyways, I get 12 months free through GM so I'm going to use that and see how it goes. I know if you are a current cell phone customer with ATT they will let you use your data plan with your wifi card as a mobile hotspot for $10 per month. I might look into that after the 12 months expire. I do know that the speeds are super fast through this connection in my truck. Below are the steps on how to install and tools required.

$60 bucks was a great deal. Guess people started buying cards like crazy because the prizes have gone up. The cheapest runs for $125.

OK, I'm sorry but still confused. I have a 2014 Sierra MyLink. Is the OnStar serviced 4G card available? Or is it only the aftermarket 3G?

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think it came out till 2015 and/or it had to come from the factory. There is def a different in the card listed here and the factory 4g wifi car through onstar

I know a lot of OnStar topics have been debated, but I haven't seen this question raised yet and I can't seem to find an answer anywhere else.

My OnStar subscription expires next month, and I already carry my truck with the phone number that was assigned by OnStar on my cell phone plan for the data coverage for the 4g LTE Wi-Fi option. So my question is since the phone number that was registered as an OnStar number is on my ATT account currently, if I opt not to continue the OnStar service, do I lose the number and 4g LTE Wi-Fi capability in the truck? I like having the Wi-Fi feature in the truck for non cell phone gadgets like tablets and laptops.

I've experienced signal loss on my cell phone in places and the truck's Wi-Fi signal was able to provide internet lookup capability, so it's one of those nice to have's or know what you're losing if you cancel OnStar.

Any wisdom in this area would be greatly appreciated.

You will definitely NOT lose the 4G capability through AT&T. OnStar is not required.

I have no idea what phone number you will actually use for AT&T, be it keeping the number you have or getting a different one. That's a simple phone call I am sure. But you definitely can keep your 4G. OnStar even offers 4G packages for non-subscribers through OnStar if you don't have AT&T.
