Dealership Service Dept. Strikes Again.......

I usually don't allow anybody to work on my vehicles, I have always done everything in my own garage and there are reasons for that.

I received a coupon by mail for a free State inspection and oil change from the Chevy dealership I buy my vehicles from. It also included some type of "multi-point" vehicle inspection and lube so I figured what the heck, might as well go for it and look at the new Silverados while I'm there.

Took my 2008 V-Max to have the "free" work done. When I arrived and told them what I was there for, they seemed eager to have their new "certified technician" do the work. They also offered the blended oil which I refused and wanted them to use the Mobil 1 syntheitc that I have used since day one, he said no problem.

They drove my truck into the service bay and started to raise it using the hydraulic lift and I hear a loud BANG! Since it was my truck on that lift of course I ask, WTF was that. This bozo of a tech goes on to say that the lift makes noise and it's normal. There was nothing normal about this BANG that I heard.

Finally after about 1.5hrs. They were finished with the "free" oil change, State inspection, and whatever the multi-point deal was. I go to the desk to get my keys and I am handed a bill for $203.50!!!!

I was in shock!

I went over to the service manager to find out why I was being robbed while I was there for "free" work. He goes on to tell me that the synthetic oil was not part of the offer and I had to pay for it, $8.00 a quart!WTF, I never paid that much for oil, ever, that's insane. There was no mention of this when I asked if they could use synthetic oil. At this point I am a little angry.

He then claims that my battery tested bad so they installed a new one at a cost of $155.50! At this point I am beyond pissed off because I know he is full of crap, I just replaced the battery last Monday., it was brand new.

This whole deal did not make me happy at all. Service manager apologizes for not mentioning the cost of the synthetic oil, ok whatever, too late now it's in the truck so I have to deal with it.

He then offers to remove the new battery and put my old one back in. Absolutely, I was going to have that taken care of if he offered or not. The one they removed was brand new and they replaced it just to make money. I wanted him to test it while I was standing there but he claimed he could not do that because it's an insurance liability to have a non-employee in the garage while work is being done.

I paid for the oil and politely told them I wouldn't be back for service ever, no matter what.

Soooooo, I finally get my keys and drive off the lot. I get to an intersection where you have to drive over a small curb while making the turn and hear CLUNK! Thinking wow, I just hit something. Pulled over, looked around, nope, nothing to hit. Continue driving, at this point I am on the interstate going 75mph and my CEL comes on, volts are dropping. Nowhere to pull over due to all of the snow and the truck shuts off, no voltage at all, wonderful.

Pulled over halfway up a snow bank, pop the hood to check the battery to be sure the clowns reinstalled my new one and see if I can figure out what happened. The clown didn't tighten the negative terminal on the battery! Luckily I have a few tools in the truck so I begin tightening the terminal and it just spins and spins, they stripped the hell out of the bolt! I had to actually use tape to hold it tight until I got home.

Now I am screaming mad, they didn't only rob me, now I have to replace parts they broke. Continue driving home and when I get off the interstate onto the bumpy roads, CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK! I thought great, now I have a bad ball joint, that's what it sounded like and I could feel the clunk under my feet.

Finally get home, pull into the garage and replace the battery terminal screw they destroyed. Finished that and went on to remove the right front tire to see whats clunking.........Here it is 8533bc00e6c7458fe1f794cdb93ccd8f.jpg

Remember the loud BANG I heard? The bozo broke the stabilizer bar link with the lift! He used the bar as a lift point instead of the frame, here's where he lifted my truck .....ce74bb083bbd5bc4cd54bf7a7f2355a3.jpg, right on the bar!

I called them immediately and let the manager know what damage they did and what that loud bang was. This joker tells me to bring it back and they will fix it free of charge. He has to be crazy thinking I am going back there!

Lesson learned, do not allow the dealership to work on any vehicles. I should have done it myself like normal, won't make that mistake again.

Sorry about the rant but I had to vent a little. It's not everyday things like this happen. It's amazing that dealerships allow these jokers to perform work on vehicles. The GM "certified" title is a joke, they don't have any idea what they are doing.

Wow !....can't blame you for not going back. The dealership I use has an awesome Service Dept., and would never pull such crap (at least not that I've experienced), as a matter of fact, we brought in my Wifes Saturn for a service, and asked to price out 2 new tires due to me being anal about my Wifes car being safe, and the 2 tires had about 50k on them.....I was told "those tires are fine, plenty of life left on them".....also during the service, they found multiple Oil leaks.....service writer told me "You may want to repair them, but your Wife doesn't put a lot of miles on the car....I would just keep an eye on the level, and if you want to down the road, start with the Valve Cover Gasket. that seems to be the worst leak"....don't see that too often.

I believe that it was incorrect to lift a truck by the stabilizer bar, but here is a different angle.

Judging from the limited view of fracture surface on the end link, it was bound to happen. The end link has been cracked and corroded for some time. Lifting the truck by the stabilizer bar put the final blow; the first loud bang while the truck was on the lift was the moment it snapped, the clunking during the drive home was the stabilizer bar hitting the end link.

I'm surprised that the truck didn't fall off of the lift.

Man, that sounds like a terrible experience. Very sorry you had to endure that.

I do have a couple "yea buts" though...

You will always get charged more for synthetic, that's standard across the board at any dealership, walmart, jiffy lube, etc. Yes, they absolutely should have told you; however $8ish is the going rate for synthetic nowadays.

blackz71silverado - I'm in California, "free", what the heck is that. When you heard the pop, so did they, and to allow you to drive away you could have been seriously hurt or killed. These are a bunch of incompetent, inconsiderate, unprofessional jerks. You should put them on blast on social networking or anywhere else you can. What is the name of the dealership, I need to make sure anyone I know doesn't stop there for service.

BTW, good post

Talked to them again today. The tech. admitted to breaking the link with the lift.

They are paying for all of the parts including a new stabilizer bar because it is bent from the lift pushing on it.

They agreed to pay the total cost to have it replaced at the shop of my choice but I am hoing to do the work myself. All I want from them are the parts.

Damn glad they fessed up and took responsibility! That's about the worst case situation I've heard in a while.

The only work that I would let them take care of would be warranty stuff.

My dads truck got a new transfer case and tranny at 2 years of age and luckily I checked the work after because there were loose bolts where it mates with the engine. And the inspection/dust covers were missing. So much fail.
