Hard start

Recommended Posts

Just got the truck 3 weeks ago. Comparing to my 07 5.3, this motor turns over for a while before starting. Video captured wasn't an overnight soak, but it turns over a few times. Is this normal with the DI. That's the only difference. My 07 turned over instantly every day no matter the temp.

Direct injection varies how long the crank is depending on temperature.

From what I saw in the video, yours looks normal. I've had my crank for a good 5 seconds if left outside in sub zero temps.

FYI you don't have to hold the key forward when starting. You can turn it till you engage the starter then let go (it will continue cranking till it starts).

Thanks a lot guys. I was slightly worried. Just comparing it to my last 5.3. It always starts, but over-night temps in single digits, cranks. Now that I know it's normal, I won't worry about it.

I've read that other DI motors do this also. Just the nature of the technology.

E85 takes an eternity.lol But for the extra power its worth it. Also much better drivability.

Nice. Found an e85 station near me. Going to try it when it warms up. Heard not so good in extreme cold. Single digits here at night.

Yeah, I just switched back over to 93. I would wait till warmer weather then run a few full tanks of E85. Driving in M5 on E85 feels like a different truck. And if your feeling a little spunky go ahead and hit the TOW HAUL button lol. Its like having a looser stall converter :driving:

Would make no difference on DI. Crank is computer controlled.

Yeah..what do I know... I'm just a EE.

Basic physics. More current available= starter turns faster.

It has NOTHING to do with being computer controlled. The computer does NOT control the starter's RPMs. It controls the starter solenoid and the engine.
