Spurshot's 2014 1500 Hunt Rig

Spurshot

Recommended Posts

I bought my truck pretty much for one reason. It's a hunting rig for my bird hunting. It also doubles as my daily commuter here in Shakey Town.

My truck is a 2014 1500 SLT GMC Sierra, All Terrain, Crewcab, 6 1/2 ft bed, 5.3L.

I found it on the internet after a week of searching inventories around the area. I called the dealer and made a deal on the phone in about 5 minutes. It turned out it was on order but had not been shipped yet. I waited about 2-3 weeks for it. My friend of 45 years is a auto delivery truck hauler. He picks up in the same large distribution yard that GM uses in the SoCal area. I gave him the VIN and he found it when it came in. He said he drove it about a foot so he could say he drove it first. Then he crawled under it and signed the muffler with a felt tip marker. He doesn't deliver for GM, but he did call me and let me know when it arrived and was sent out.

The day I bought it.

I started on the mods at about 1800 miles with the tires.

Cooper ST Maxx 305/60-18 Load Range E on the stock AT wheels. No level or lift. They cleared just fine. Never heard it rub.

After the tires, I installed some Bushwacker 1.25" flares to keep the wider tires inside.

I don't know if I can recall all the mods, but there have been a good bunch...and some are still on the way.

The headlights were weak and I first put in 9011 bulbs for a small improvement.

I leveled it with a spacer for a while, then put King shocks and Cognito upper control arms on it later. Somewhere in the middle, I decided I wanted more braking power and put Wilwood 14.25" disks and 6 piston calipers on it.

I also put Helwig swaybars on it.

Somewhere along the line, I put in some Baja Designs LED driving lights. 2 wide beams and 2 spot beams, 2200 Lumens each. Then the Morimoto HID kit in the factory projectors.

In late December 2014, I put on these wheels and the Snugtop topper. They're MHT Fuel, Anza wheels. The Snugtop is a Hi-liner model with optional side win-doors, roof tracks, and a few other options.

I still have yet to do my headlight projector retrofit. But it's going to happen. Rigid DOT/SAE fog lights are on order as of this writing.

I put the full length bed drawers, from my old truck, into this one. They're made by Ainley Kennels and are all aluminum, with ball bearing slides. The top surface is a heavy rubber bed mat I screwed down to it and trimmed.

Oh, and the foglights with high beams was my mod thread, which I did as well.

Then there was the AMP power steps.

Cool truck, but all of this for hunting birds?

I couldn't come up with anything better. Sounds as good as anything I've heard so far. I thought it sounded better than "I liked the looks of these A-arms"

Lol, i just would say just because...why not? I love your truck. If i had the money/patience i would've done the same. I.E. wait on bilsteins coilovers. But for my weekend warrior/summer farm hitting trail self i think Bilsteins with 33" tires will do the job.

Did you go with the uni ball UCAs from cognito or the ball joint ones? I know you had a post about them but I can't find it. I feel like I'm ruining my stock ball joints with my el cheapo RC spacer kit. I've got to go a different route.

Spurshot, absolutely love the mods. The front end suspension setup is perfect. Question about the LEDs - do you have them wired into your headlights (so they are on when the headlights are on) or are they on an auxiliary switch? I'm looking to do something similar on my Silverado but I'm not sure exactly how to proceed just yet
