To keep truck or get a new one?

Very true from a cost perspective I know if I keep it I will have to put a few bucks into it maintenance-wise but yes it would still be less than a new one. Although with a new one if anything happened to go wrong it's covered.

If I keep it to "freshen it up" a bit I may add a new muffler and perhaps some chrome tipped pipes out the back.

With the way it's been (hopefully I don't jinx) but I'm sure that I could easily get 200k miles outta this truck without any major issues.

That makes the decision even harder.

Now you wanna keep the truck and she wants to get rid of it...

(I'd say keep it... )

haha...that definitely would have been the reaction of a lot of my girlfriends in the past but this one just laughs it off... but then we've known each other since elementary school and right through high school...

True.

But after 5 years or 100000mls you'd have to ask the same question. Keep or trade?

A lot of people still have payments on the truck/car when they trade it in for a new one.

I'm not saying that it is the case with you.

But many people forget that the tax, delivery and all other expenses additional to the sale price are still part of this payment.

After subtracting the trade in value of the old truck there is most likely still an amount of the old payment left. That will be added to the new one. So you'll end up paying for the new truck and still paying for tax etc. of the old truck.

Wash and wax your truck, and you'll come to your senses. Mine was bought new in '08 as well, and just turned 60k miles.

Also, you can buy a new truck any time... but imagine trying to find/buy *your* truck for what it's worth today.

Very good point. I'll be honest though typically I buy a vehicle pay it off and then after 3 or 4 years I buy a new one because I get tired of the one I've got. So I give this truck a lot of credit because I've really never gotten tired of it.

haha...I would except that it's 2F right now.

Good point too and that's probably one of the reasons aside from selling me a new one that the dealer is always trying to get me to trade in my truck. I guarantee it wouldn't sit on their lot more than a couple of days before someone snatched it up.

I did it both ways. Keeping the vehicle for forever or taking it to the junk yard for its last drive and trading it in before 50,000 miles or around 5 years to get my best figure to get a new one. I find it is so hard to start from dollar one instead of getting a decent trade in value and applying it to a new vehicle. In CT you also don't pay state tax on the amount of the trade in toward a new or other older vehicle. These vehicles as well as repairs (computers etc.) are getting very expensive to buy and maintain if you keep it for a long time. It is getting very hard to do the work yourself. One thing that could be a big issue is gas mileage and cost of gas. If they start getting the trucks in the range of 35 plus miles per gallon, trucks getting 15 MPG are worth a lot less if gas prices go up very high. Safety equipment etc. is always getting better. Dependability is another thing and getting rid of the vehicle before something major goes wrong. Timing is everything as well if the market is bad selling new vehicles to get good deals. The other concern if you pay cash or take a loan on the vehicle. The second hand market is very strong on low mileage vehicle. So if everything is lined up the way you want it, I would prefer trading in my vehicle early (like how leases are set up at 10,000 plus per year for 3 plus years etc.) to get my best trade in figure and apply it to a new vehicle. You might pay more money up front but save on repairs (don't add value to the vehicle) on the end especially if you do a lot of towing or plowing.

Keep it and add a few mods! I just lost my '12 in an accident... If i hadn't that truck would have been run well past the 150 mark.

I have the same plan now.. I just had to start over with a '15. Can't wait until these payments are done with.. (only 59 months to go lol)

Very good advice on both counts...Like I've said before I usually get tired of vehicles by about the 3rd year....but this truck... ya just doesn't seem to have happened yet..

Not to say a really good deal couldn't entice me...lol

May just do a mod or two to "freshen" it up a bit.

Buy new. You only live once so get what you want when you want it As long as you are smart with your finances.

I buy new because I am the first owner, have a warranty, reliability, more technology, better fuel mileage.

Absolutely! I started buying brand new since I finished school so this one and my last one have been brand new.

Whoever gets this truck when I do sell will be really happy as it still looks like new inside and out.

I tried to purchase a new Sierra SLE Reg Cab 2wd Long Box but none are available. I will have to wait till October and probably factory order a 2016. If you consider just the financial viewpoint about buying or keeping your vehicle then by all means keep it. The smell and feel of a new one, well you know how that is !!

It all depends on you and what you want. I would love a new truck or at least I think about it. I have a 2010 2500 that just went over 65K. Point is do you want the payments of a new truck or keep the old one. I'm know that I'm keeping mine. I have a new 2016 Ski-Doo MXZx 1200 already ordered for winter. Also my wife and I have been looking at side x sides. Looking to pick one up within the next few weeks. If I had a new truck payment along with the wife's car payment. I wouldn't be able to get the sled and SxS. I haven't had any problems with it other than the drivers side window switch is starting to act up. Anyways
