To keep truck or get a new one?

Hey guys,

So I've been debating whether or not I should keep my current truck a while longer and maybe have some fun with a few new mods like exhaust etc? Or grab a new one? Was offered a pretty sweet deal on a couple new trucks last week.

 

My current truck is an 08 Silverado Z71 as you can see in my pic, that just turned over 100k miles. I will honestly say this is my favorite vehicle of all of the ones I've bought which is evident just by the fact that I've owned this one since new over 6 1/2 yrs ago...I usually get tired of vehicles after about 3 or 4 years... I've had no major issues with the truck...

 

What would you do?

That makes the decision even harder.

Now you wanna keep the truck and she wants to get rid of it...

No reason to strap yourself with a payment......I'd keep it.

I have said it before and I will always say it, new vehicles are bad money.

 

Buying brand new is a horrible disaster from a financial perspective. You sign on the line for a 50K truck at 1:00 PM. You drive it off the lot and head home at 1:05 PM, it's now worth 35K. Invest your money, pretend you have a vehicle payment and have the money deposited into a separate bank account each month. Before you know it, 5 more years has gone by and you have 40,000 in cold hard cash socked away.

 

My opinion is that life is only getting harder. Costs for everything continue to rise, wages do not rise. The economy is still unsettled by a long shot, and no one knows where things will go. This is a very rocky time in our world right now, taking on tens of thousands in debt is not smart, in my opinion.

 

You said it yourself, this truck has given you no issues, and works fine. Soooo...why get rid of a truck that works fine, and your still happy with? Even if you need to do a few major things in the next few years and spend 5K, your still way ahead financially speaking. All of the financial experts say to make a brand new car pay, you need to keep it for 15 years. By that logic, you have 8 years left with your 08 Z71!

 

The trick is to make yourself love the truck again. Instead of buying a new truck, dress up what you have. Lift it, put on new wheels and some bolt on mods. Then continue to drive it with no payments happy as a clam while still turning heads.

Very smart logic....I run my vehicles to the ground! I bought my 2010 GMC Sierra "All Terrain" optioned the way I wanted because I plan on keeping it forever. I get my money's worth...or at least I try

The only thing what could make me loose 5min of my beauty sleep and think about a new truck would be a 4.5L V8 Duramax in a Blue Ray Metalic Silverado 1500.

Since none of it is gonna happen...

 

The money you'd loose on a trade in, doc fees, loss of value as soon as you've signed the papers, tax, delivery and so on are really worth to consider to keep your good old reliable truck.

As nice as the new trucks are, what would you gain?

As much as I joke with my wife about getting a new truck I have little desire to right now. Getting ready this spring for some 50K maintenance. Want to pay off the car and van then we will see.

I agree with keeping it, I have yet to update any pics in here in a long while, but I was thinking of a newer(2011+) truck a while back, and after evaluating my future goals (house, student loans completely paid off) I decided to throw some $ at the truck, I figured what I put into it is only 3 newer truck payments, and it will keep me pleased for a few more years while I make those goals happen.

 

My keep me happy list

- Alpine deck/ Amp/ 2 10" subs in a prefab under the seat box

- JL audio speakers

- 45% front window tint

- 17" Mickey Thompson wheels (craigslisted with 70% rubber for 450$)

All said and done I spent 1600 $ - 3 installments of 533 to keep a truck that costs me under 200 a month in gas/ insurance? Yep, cant even buy a corolla for less then that, and that's without the gas and insurance.

 

Truck hit 127k for a 12 year old pickup, not a bad investment in my book to just keep your ride.
