I am now the proud owner of a 2012 GMC Canyon. It comes equipped with OnStar and a 3 month free period. After 2 weeks I can not find a reason to keep it. I have a cell phone, I have a Garmin, I live in a city. Are there any down sides for not having it? Can you take out all the parts? What do you do with the parts if you take them out?

You don't need to take any of it out, it just won't be activated. I have a smartphone and AAA, but I still like it because they can sent you help if you get into an accident even if you get knocked out which means you won't be able to call for help. They will automatically call you if they sense you got into an accident. You can also use it to call directly for help if you witness an accident. I can assume it would be easier to use than calling 911 since OnStar knows your location and you just tell them what happened. If you're not familiar with where you are it would sometimes be hard to tell them exactly where you are. I think of it like I think of AAA, it's nice to have if you need it. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I don't have the one with directions since it's the most basic navigation and I have navigation on my phone. The OnStar Navigation surely isn't worth an extra $10 a month.

I agree, and when traveling, not knowing where you are and loosing your cell phone signal, the Onstar signal will work. Plus, if I get involved in an accident or run off the road, Onstar can send help to me without me trying to figure out where I am.

I like it since I can unlock my vehicle with my cell phone. Wife likes it since she can lock the keys in the vehicle when she goes to the beach and unlock it when she is done enjoying the salt air and doesn't have to worry about her keys and the sand.

As others have said, the Mobile App is nice to have, as well as the Auto call for 911 services once an Airbag is deployed. Another is if your vehicle is ever involved in a theft, it has the GPS Locator.

I honestly like it too. I like the fact that it can unlock my doors if I lock my keys in there...If I am in an accident and for whatever reason can't contact someone they will take care of that for me.....And the best feature....if you are in any kind of relationship this can be the biggest relationship saver...turn by turn navigation! LOL No arguments about where to turn or someone forgetting to tell you to turn etc.

Now yes you can buy a GPS but this one is always updated, I don't have to do anything to it and I don't have something suction cupped to my windshield etc...but hey that's just me.

Me too. I had mine activated on all three trucks I had (one truck at a time).

There are discounts. So read up on the discounts.

Exactly. I do the same with my cell phone bill...call and bargain with them. They have run to move and basically if you have good credit they will work something out for you.

After 2 weeks I can not find a reason to keep it.

Dealer sent me an email advising that they were notified by Onstar of 2 recalls on my truck. Took it in yesterday for an oil change and fix for the recalls. May be a reason to keep it?
