What a rip off!

Police cars still get a full size spare tire. Apparently they do not like the idea of a high speed chase with a donut spare tire installed, or the punctured tire "fixed" with a can of slime.

When old police cars are auctioned off, they are typically missing the spare wheel/tire. This is because police departments remove them before the cars are sold them and use them as replacement tires for their new vehicles when tires wear out.

My 1986 Camaro has a compartment in the trunk that has a spare, if you could call it that. The IROC has front and rear wheels that are dished differently along with directional tires. This spare is a rim with a collapsed rubber tire, that also includes a can of air. I laughed when I seen it for the first time. The whole thing is no bigger than a rim in its current state.

What do you think the chances of that can of air working after 29 years? I haven't even bothered to replace it after all these years, because I don't ever want to be tempted to use it, even in an emergency. I have road assistance on my insurance policy, should I ever need it. I guess it's slightly better than nothing, but not by much. I think I have actually seen it twice in the last 29 years. Probably 2 Times too many!

Just checked the original window sticker to see if they charged me extra for that spare and thankfully it wasn't on there. They did nickel and dime over 6K for every option on that thing though. Just got reminded. I'd still do it all over if I could. Especially the part of being 25 again.

So, the moral of this story is, you might just get lucky enough to never have to use the spare? Maybe not?
