Mounting Location for P3 & harness ?

Hello all. I have a question and was also looking for some opinions on mounting a brake controller in my truck based on your experiences.

I own a 2014 Sierra SLT All Terrain with the standard tow package, that I’d like to install a Tekonsha P3 Electronic Brake Control into (haven’t bought the controller as yet).

I was wondering where others have mounted their controller and what your thoughts are around the functionality of said location? i.e. right of steering column under the dash – do you hit your knee on it and/or is it difficult see/reach to adjust, or better to be on the left side...etc, etc?

Also, should there be a GM harness that can just 'plug in' under the dash, or will I need to wire up a generic harness? I can see some type of jack mounted under the dash right by the front lip...

Many thanks for any feedback.

I have a 2011 and it came with blunt cut wires for the brake controller taped up under the dash. I had to splice to the harness that came with the controller. Your 2014 may be the same?

I mounted my controller to the bottom edge of the dash left of the steering column.

Zebrafive is correct, there should be blunt cut wires under the dash just above where the brake pedal is (at least on my 2012 thats the location). You may also need to add a fuse and hook up some wires in the fuse box under the hood. On my 12 sle that didn't have the center console I mounted the controller under the dash center stack there was a small flat lip under it that I swear was made for the P3 to mount and it was out of your way but still close enough to easily reach and best part was it didn't require drilling into the dash where it was visible. Good luck and great choice on the P3 controller they are awesome! I kept mine after I traded my truck just in case, it will be interesting to compare that to the built I'm controller in my 2500HD.

I mounted mine in the fake "ash tray" door. I wish I could upload a photo but can't figure out how to shrink to under 1MB. Looks awesome and able to close the door as long as I remove the controller. I don't use it a lot so it doesn't matter. I just didn't want to drill holes in my dash.

Check your camera and see if it has settings to change the pixels. Mine I have to set to "PC" and have no trouble loading pictures.

That looks really good, nice job! Does the door completely close when not in use? or do you have to unplug the P3 to close it?

I have to remove it. I tried every position I could to be able to close the door but the P3 is just too deep for the door. I don't tow a lot so I just take it to and throw it in the console when not in use. Better than drilling holes in the dash or kick panels

Has anyone added a brake to their 2014? Is there a GMC/Sierra specific wire harness?

Read above. The pic was of the P3 I installed in my 14. You should have a wiring harness the dealer supplied in the glove box. That's where mine was.

GMTEC2 - sorry, missed that! Thanks for the info - your install does look slick in the ashtray like that. I don't have that tray in my center console though, so will have to figure something else out. fAnd I didn't find a wire harness in my glovebox, will have to get back hold of the dealer...

I have the P3 in my 2014 Silverado, I mounted mine almost inline with my right knee, it makes it so you can look down thru the steering wheel to see the screen if you need to. It makes it easy to manually control your trailer brakes if you need to. :D
