Well there is definitely a point when a new truck becomes a "beater" I personally think he should get it fixed as I would do the same on mine. My 2014 is a long time from being a beater and intend on keeping it looking good for the time being.

 

This, the minor scratches i can handle, though will likely get repaired anyway just because i'm getting the tailgate fixed. The tailgate scratch is a good 8-10" long. While it's not 100% noticeable if driving behind the truck or standing away it's clearly noticeable if your standing next to it. It's something that shouldn't have happened regardless though.
