99 sierra 2500 carrier bearing

Recommended Posts

Hi good people!

Looking for a little help. My trusty parts guy tells me that there are 2 or 3 sizes of carrier bearings listed for my truck, and that I have to measure it (35mm and something else) It's pretty hard to measure lying in snow at night, in -15F weather with a tape measure loll... And I can't dismantle the whole shaft to take it to a shop because I cannot loose the truck for even an hour right now.

Is there a way ( by VIN or Model or something ) to determine FOR SURE what size I need??

I replaced 3 out of 5 u joints (2 on the small shaft and the one directly behing the tranny, and still got a vibe that almost disappears when I let off the gas and coast. The 2 remaining u-joints are nice and solid when I try to rock them. They are older, don't have grease fittings but seem solid.

1999 GMC sierra 2500 4X4,

Extended cab (3 doors)
Long box, 6.0l Automatic transmission.

Thank you in advance!

Maybe it's me being french and all, but am I to understand that you don't recommend that I do this by myself, and or I'm going wrong in thinking it's the cause of my vibrations?

Looking for a little help... that's all. I'm new to GM's but been around equipment and trucks all my life and I know my way around the toolbox....

Your guessing that's all,

a hanger bearing gets replaced when the rubber around it cracks and sags , I've never seen one cause a vibration ,all u joints should be checked physically with the shaft off , a seized u joint cannot be seen on the vehicle , they will squeak rotationaly however ,

Being new to a different manufacturer means nothing , they are all the same , they all break

I'm just wondering why you assume that I'm guessing.... The rubber IS cracked around the bearing.

The other joints I replaced had play in them.

Being new to a different brand DOES mean something: it means I never dealt with such a stupid drive shaft assembly. One more strike for the GM's in my book.

Anyways, thanks for the help, I guess.

Soooooooo.... as per my original post.....

IS IT POSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY THE CARRIER BEARING WITHOUT TAKING IT OFF???

Thank you
