Oil report

Recommended Posts

Had my oil analyzed by blackstone

1st off they questioned the engine I had saying the largest was the 5.3 so I sent them an email explaining I have the L9H 6.2. All the comparison data is for the 5.3 so not sure if it is apples to apples, waiting for their reply.

Iron content is high and also water percentage (my catch can shows this as its a tanish color during winter). I believe this is from the cold weather. Will send in another sample this summer.

Percentage of water found in sample given as a percentage of total volume. Moisture is common in short trip vehicles that don’t fully get the oil up to operating temperature long enough. It generally takes 10-15 minutes for the oil to get to this temperature, which is enough to start evaporating the moisture in the sample. The same goes for fuel in your sample too. An occasional long highway drive is good for your oil’s health.

I wouldn't worry about the comparison to the 5.3... The levels should be similar. If anything I'd expect your 6.2 to be a little cleaner.

I send mine to Blackstone and they have me on a 10k interval. It's good peace of mind being able to see what is actually in the oil.

Waiting to get my 2013 5.3L to less than 10% on the OLM and then change the oil and send in a sample. I will send it to the same lab that I send my commercial truck samples, the lab run by my oil supplier. They give me free kits and free oil analysis because I buy bulk quantities of oil for my commercial stuff. Just looking at the OP sample had me shocked. I don't have Iron and copper levels anywhere near that high in 25,000 miles on my semi truck! My semi, the usual iron level is around 17 and the copper at 1-2. Will be interesting to see how the Schaeffer 9000 5w30 synthetic I am using in the 5.3L looks. Oil level has dropped about 1/4 of a quart in 6000 miles, and I am at around 23% on the OLM. Except for the iron and copper, your sample seems pretty good.

And that could be true. Especially in the cooler weather. My PCV oil catch can really collects a lot of milky oil crap in the cooler months when I have used E85. It might be a stretch, but it is possible that would explain the higher iron content also. I would think you would see up tick in all wear metals, but it could explain things. Since fuel prices are low now, I would just run E10, E15, or even regular and see if that makes a difference on the next oil sample if you run one. Which given the results you got, I would run another at the next oil change.

In my area, E15 is the best value right now on a mpg and cost standpoint. E85 has not gotten the normal seasonal price spread in my area, so it looks like E85 is a no go for me for a while.
