Home Link garage door opener issue

Recommended Posts

For some reason, my garage door opener will only work if I'm right up against the door with the truck. In my wife's Buick, which I assume uses the same setup, she can open her door from the street as she's turning into the driveway. I normally back into the garage, but I switched to driving in forward this week to see if it worked any better, to no avail. My driveway is only about 60-70' long, so it's not like it's a country mile.

Every other vehicle I've owned, along with the supplied remotes for the door, will open the door from the street.

Anyone else have this issue?

Mine works from the down the street - previous truck did too.

This issue has been posted before, so you're not the only one. Sorry i don't recall the outcome of the previous post.

Try reteaching it, and/or teaching it on one of the other buttons.

Post your results for others.

Mine needs to be close too. I have heard that you want a brand new battery when you sync the controller to your truck. I know mine was not new back then, but I intend to see if I can re-sync with a brand new battery this weekend. I guess that the newer battery sends a stronger signal, and therefore syncs in a stronger signal to your trucks controller. I'll let you know if it works.

"Hell, I'd piss on a spark plug if I thought it would do any good"!

Same issue on my '14 Sierra. Our Enclave, Jeep and the remotes that came with the opener will get the job done from out in the street (60' Driveway). My new truck only opens the door half of the time and then, the truck has to be just inches from the door (thank goodness for parking assist). I've never had success down the on the street or in the driveway.

I took the truck to the dealer today and was questioned if I properly "trained and learned" the remote to the truck then the truck to the opener. Obviously I did since it works occasionally. One of my "We Owe" items requires a part to be ordered so when that arrives, they're going to check out the transmitter. I'm a little concerned because the service writer didn't seem too optimistic about the fix.

I have to be right next to the garage door also. The remote that came with the door opener works almost a half block away.

This problem in not unique to our trucks. Do a Google search and you will find a ton of hits with different makes and models.

I appears to me that the Homelink transmitters vary considerably in their power output from one unit to the next.

Homelink is useless for customer support. They always seem to say the same thing (Make sure your training remote has a new battery and re-learn).

Just curious, for those of you who are having distance issues, is your garage at street level or higher?

My garage floor is approximately 42-48" above the grade of the street.

I will try the new battery in the remote. The one in there is not very old, and it worked fine programming the wife's Buick 3 weeks before programming my truck, but it's a cheap fix. I'll also try programming a different button. Won't be able to get to it until next weekend, but I will report the results.

Thanks for these tips.

I put a new battery in the garage remote. Cancelled the previous home link setting, and relearned the the trucks remote. It did increase my range from right in front of the garage door to half way down my driveway. Not great but better. The hand remote will open the garage door from the road at the edge of the yard, which is over 2x the distance.

I may try a new frequency setting code on the opener, if the door isn't moving fast enough. Doubt that it will make a difference, but you never know?

At least I don't have to kiss the garage door with the front bumper now to get it to open.

I put and extension on my garage door opener antenna. Ran a 10 ft piece of wire and spliced it to the antenna wore.

The door opens fine now. The homelink seems fairly directional in the trucks. Had no issues with my Treaverse's I owned before.
