First fluid changes on the new K2's??

The first line fascinates me. The dealer warranties the power train for 5yrs/100,000 miles and doesn't recommend any service for our trans/diffs till ~98,000 miles. If the manufacturer that warranties the vehicle stands behind the service intervals and steps I wonder what engineering background you have or statistical analysis you've performed that empirically tells you doing anything else has any actual benefit.

 

It is painful to my brain to (hint) watch how much engineering and testing they do on these parts just to have the general inter web know-it-alls invent their own maintenance schedules

 

You know what you don't see much or read on these forums? How many guys followed their dealer/service manual instructions exactly and still have major problems.

Also depends on the climate you're in, how much you tow, how hard you are on the truck, there are many factors to figuring out the change interval. The factory does not specify a differential fluid change at all. Now I know that is wrong. Could you imagine going 250k on the same diff fluid? It ain't happening. Besides, it doesn't hurt the truck to change fluids sooner than recommended. It's my money and I'll do what I feel is right for the truck

 

Bearings are still made the same as 10 years ago for the most part so they still need to seat and break in and the gears need to go through the necessary heat cycles to strengthen them.

 

GM is in it for the money which is why I personally feel they recommend such a long interval (97,500 mi) before changing any driveline fluids. That way when your odometer hits 6 digits, your warranty is out and your driveline parts are getting close to their life. Most people don't keep a vehicle very long these days which is why I feel they don't have a change interval for the differentials.

 

My dad's cam got wiped on his 09 Silvy at around 103k. Out of warranty, but the dealership was kind enough to offer him the extended warranty at half the cost and they covered the other half.

 

Not sure how we managed to get on the topic of change intervals, I was simply asking other members' recommendations on when to change out critical fluids, and when they think they are "broken in" enough to get the majority of the break in shavings and such out of the driveline and powertrain

I know the shop that swapped my gears in my 02 silverado told me to change the fluid again after the first 500 miles. Took their recommendation and waalaa! the diffs were full of fine metal shavings, like anti seize. This is after 500 miles:

Ain't nothing different going on at the GM factory that makes their gears and parts so special

Pg 11-7 in the owners manual has a schedule for severe service and at 47,500 mile intervals it says replace transmission oil/filter and t-case oil. No mention of the diffs though. Pg 11-2 has the conditions that signify "severe service".

In 02 they didn't have todays' fluid.

  1. State your automotive engineering background to which you "know that is wrong"?
  2. Page 10-34 of my 2014 Sierra owners manual:

"Rear Axle - When to Check Lubricant

It is not necessary to regularly check rear axle fluid unless a leak is suspected or an unusual noise is heard. A fluid loss could indicate a problem. Have it inspected and repaired."

Past experience has told me that it's wrong. Yeah its my experience, which is credible enough FOR ME

The differential fluid level needs to be checked at the very minimum. The dealer is supposed to check this during pre-delivery inspection. My truck was almost 2 pints low, and the fluid was this nasty black crap. The magnets had a fair amount of buildup at 10k miles. I thoroughly cleaned everything and refilled with Amsoil Severe Gear oil. Now I know what is in there, and that it has the correct amount.

I'm gonna do mine saturday morning, right before a small road trip later in the day. Mobil 1 full syn for the rear, Mobil 1 in the engine, and regular dino 80w90 in the front diff. I should be right around 1k miles at that point.

 

On this truck, since it's new, I'm keeping a maintenance log for everything I do with the corresponding mileage and engine hours as well as the date I perform it on. That way I can always just look back if I don't remember when I last did it haha

I plan on doing my trans @ 50 K for sure and maybe, MAYBE the diff @ 100K, I believe it is factory filled with synthetic .My truck, my money, my schedule.

Severe service schedule in the OM says change transmission and transfer case at 45,000. Brake fluid as well.

You'll be right on schedule.
