Exhaust with no drone?

Recommended Posts

So I have a 2014 sierra rcsb and from what I understand here is that if you remove the flapper valve and the 3rd muffler you will hear drone and the v4 helicopter noise. I am looking for a performance sounding exhaust that will not drone. I also have a 2008 gmc with the 5.3 and it has a magnaflow cat back. The drone is absolutely awful. It had a flowmaster on it before but rusted out. However I think that sounded alot better.

Anyway searching around on youtube I love "kinney's" true dual flowmaster but I bet there would be drone noise with that cruising around.

All I'm after is a relatively stock performance sounding exhaust. Kinda as if you wouldnt know there is an exhaust system on it until you really romp on it but when you do you think "oh my.. this truck has some performance to it!"

Anyone think theyve got an answer for me? I'm going to bet corsa is what I'm looking for

Back in the day we didn't have the drone. We ran smaller pipes and kept the exhaust separate. Most cars came with 2" one exhaust pipe and we just added a dual 2" pipes and glass packs or thrush mufflers and no cross over. Sweet sounds. Even the cars that came with duals had 2 to 21/4 pipes and no cross over. So im guessing the big pipes and the cross over are where the drone comes from. The V4 is a different animal, that's not really a drone its sounds more like a miss fire.

Is there only one Corsa for the Sierra? The sound will probably differ between the 5.3 and 6.2, right?

You are correct, there is a SPORT model available for 2014 models right now but the part numbers and sounds will be different obviously depending on the truck specs you fill out.

My Corsa is quiet until you get on it but as stated above, it will drone a bit at high highway speeds in 4 cylinder mode... despite their 'No Drone' claim.

I had the 22" Magnaflow and had no drone.

But... it just wasn't loud enough for me!

So I replaced it with the 14" Magnaflow, rez delete, flapper delete. Perfect!

Drone? Yes, but I like drone. Now it sounds like a Chevy V8!

GM accessories offers a Borla with the flapper still in place - with choices for side and rear exit. Pricey, but may be what you're looking for.

I have the GM Borla system, and there is no drone whatsoever. You can still slightly hear the V4 thing, but nothing like it was with my Magnaflow system on my last truck.

Only the GM Borla system has the "Adaptive Exhaust Valve" included which I think helps control the V4 issue. I understand that if you order a Borla system direct from Borla, or another supplier, for the 2014 Chev/GM models, it will not have the Exhaust Valve as part of the system. In other words, you must order the Borla system through GM to have the valve, and it is fairly "pricey", but it works.

The GM Borla system apparently uses the Borla "Touring" muffler, although Borla won't specifically confirm that, they say it is a muffler built to GM specs. Anyway, the "Touring" Borla muffler is their "quietest", but to me, there is plenty of sound. Just like you say, when you step on it, you sure know it's there. I went with the dual side exit package, as I've had the dual rear outlets on my last 2 trucks, and needed a change.

Here's a pic of the truck showing the dual side exit pipes, and the GM Borla system before installation, which shows the "Adaptive Exhaust Valve" built in as part of the header pipe.
