What about where your new heat shield meets the chassis. You see where it dips correct? how is that a perfect seal. Put some petroleum jelly or something oily on your heat shield foam, and shut your hood to see where it makes contact. then you will know for sure. I myself have the Airaid M.I.T. in my truck. I love the sound. here is a link to a thread posting the dyno for multiple intakes on an 08 5.3l. just food for thought.

Sounds like most you guys putting in the CAI's are doing in for the sounds and not really for any HP or MPG gains. Seems like a similar reason to the guys putting aftermarket exhausts on. I completely understand the "sound" factor in our trucks. I love those throaty powerful sounds the engines and exhausts make as much the rest of you. A CAI is probably half the price of a cat-back, although not the same type of sound, and you still get that cool sound effect for less money. To each their own. I myself have never done a CAI but have always used K&N air filters in my vehicles just for the simple fact they are cleanable and reusable and I don't have to keep buying and throwing away the normal paper ones. Never have had any issues with them.

I put a K&N intake on my 98 and it seemed to help with throttle response but it did hurt the MPGs. The main reason was the fact of not having to clean the filter until about 100,000 miles. I also had planned on a functional cowl induction hood and the top of the heat shield being open I figure it wouldn't have been perfect.

As for my '14, I just got the Airaid MIT tube so it kept the stock filter box and filter. It didn't seem to help throttle response, which I figured, but it did help with the engine bay with looks and easier to get to things to maintain and fix. I'm not going the aftermarket filter route on this truck because I'd rather be safe than sorry with both an oiled filter and dry filter which I hear doesn't filter as well as an oiled filter. I only replaced the MAF sensor on my 98 once and wasn't soon after installing the K&N so I only assume it was just from being old.

As for the heat issue, the heatshield should help some. I mean the air will get hot in the stock intake system. The only way you can keep the air from the heat the best is a true CAI which grabs air from the cowl or underneath the front bumper. That's why I dont' call any of these kits CAI kits, I just call them air intake kits.

I did it for the look and for the washable filter, the sound is kind of annoying to me, HP gain I doubt, its just for looks

That's the reason I got the K&N kit on my 98. I figured it would pay for itself over time over buying paper filters over and over. But, when I got this '14 I saw that the filters only need changed every 45,000 miles I believe so the washable filter wasn't worth it to me. I did put an Airaid MIT tube on though so I kept the stock filter box and filter in. Looks much better and easier to get to things. I know it wasn't any real gains. Throttle response might have went up a tad but nothing enough to really notice. Even the full K&N kit I had on the 98 once the engine was up to operating temps and the engine bay was hot the HP gain was only about 3, but I did feel the throttle response was better.

if id known about the Airaid tube, I would have done that with a replacement filter, good idea for next time

They have what's called JR Kits which is exactly what you'd want. It's just the MIT tube and replacement filter. They also have 2 filter options, oiled and dry synthetic. If that's really want you want then consider selling the K&N and just buying a stock filter box if you didn't keep your old one.
