Is this a pinion leak? Dealer said its just condensation from A/C

I took my truck in on Wednesday for a intermittent no start, frame rust and the pinion leak. They called Monday morning and told me they found nothing on the on start, the rust isn’t bad enough to worry about and the leak was from the A/C. I told them you might want to have someone else look at the leak because I wasn’t buying that. Then asked about the TSB for the frame rust. He then said that they wasn’t done with it yet. He was just calling to let me know how it was going. I guess they have to call and see how stupid you are before they actually fix your vehicle. It is now Tuesday and I haven’t heard back yet. Today is now 32 business days in the shop since I bought it in March.

Thanks for the input.

A/C condensation draining on the rear pinion? Ha! Whoever called you sounds pretty clueless.

Kinda like the 30 year old service manager that sat in my passenger seat while my 14 silverado transmission slipped and caught so hard on a spirited takeoff that his head bounced off the headrest. "Yeah, thats normal, its driveline flex".

Driveline flex? I just looked at him and shook my head. Really? I demonstrated it for him a few more times, with the same results, (yeah his head kept bouncing off the headrest, HA!) then we discussed it, but nothing I said could change his mind.

I stayed polite, but it was difficult. A month or so later I found GM PIP5175B about transmissions slipping on some 14s. Called him up and told him about it. He agreed to look at it again and they found internal pump leakage and repaired it.

But, what do I know? Im just an old guy whos been turning wrenches since that service manager was in diapers.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hadn't heard anything about my truck in 4 weeks so I gave them a call today. Talked to the service manager and he said they are waiting on a kit for the frame rust. When I asked about the pinion leak he said they couldn't find any leak and it must be from something I ran over. It just keeps getting better. These guys should be comedy writers. I did email the GM rep that posted his email on this thread today, to see what he says.

Another great GM dealer's service. Should not be that difficult to see if it's the seal. Problem is the book rate to do the job isn't worth it to the techs so they say it's fine since they know it will leak like that a long time before any real problems. A dealer once told me my steering locked at 65 because of AC condensation, I think they better stop putting AC on these trucks.

The reason they gave me for it taking so long is they ordered the kit from some where using a credit card. The place was out of kits then when they got more in they wouldn't take their credit card. So they had to mail a check and wait for it to clear the bank before it could be shipped. Not sure why they didn't have me pick it up. When I originally took it in they gave me a service loaner so I still have a truck to drive.

I would say ding the dealer when the service review comes in to you. Dealers will not change their habits until the reviews that are sent into GM which cause them to lose money force them to change.

Here is the GM Rep's response.

I just wanted to give you an update and hope this message finds you well. I touched base with Cliff at the dealership. He stated that they did see that there was possibly some mositure in that area at one point. However, after further inspection, no leak or seeping was found at this time. As a result, there's nothing to be repaired regarding the pinion at this time. He also stated that they're still waiting for the kit to arrive to complete your repair. Please feel free to keep me posted or reach back out if you have additional questions in the future.

My reply.

Thank you for the update. I was first told "the moisture" was condensation from the A/C, which we all know is not true. Then when I called back to check on it, I was told it was from something I ran over. I have no idea how it could have only got around the rear differential just aft of the pinion seal. Again I know this is not true. Now that they have ruled out the pinion seal are they investigating what is causing oil to accumulate around the rear differential?
