New Ring Gear Break-In?

Recommended Posts

Ok so Ive had my truck at the dealers for the last 28 days getting the rear ring and pinion changed due to the whining noise while under load. I asked them when I picked it up today if I had to break in the ring gear and change the lube at xxx miles. They had no idea what the hell I was talking about. Told me to just drive it. I have a jeep and when I changed out my gears, I had to maintain a certain speed for so many miles and heat cycles. Then change the gear oil after 500 miles.

Does this not apply in this case? And if not why? It's a brand new gear, pinion, seals and whatnot.

This is an age old debate. Some say it's a must and others say not to worry. I personally think the line of thinking on breaking in gears comes in large part to who is regearing. Maybe it's because it's usually muscle cars and off road vehicles that see lots of abuse. When I regeared my guy just told me not to tow for the first 500 miles. He wasn't concerned about anything else.

They don't break in the factory ones, so why should factory parts that have been replaced need anything different? Provided the tech has the backlash set correctly and the wear pattern is good then just drive it.
