Exhaust leak on 2015 Duramax

Recommended Posts

I have a 2015 crew cab duramax. At 2k miles I had white steam coming out of the exhaust clamp while the truck was in regen mode. The clamp

is visible in the passenger side front wheel well. I took it to the dealer. Amazingly there is a TSB out for this problem and covers numerous years. Two hours later they ended up changing the clamp. Same issue for a couple years and still using the same clamp on a $62k truck.

True.. but go hang out around the Ford, Dodge, and Toyota service bays for awhile and you'll see new trucks being brought in on flatbeds quite often as well so don't feel too bad.

Im having this same issue. Stand-by for rant...

So I made an appointment for this smoke issue and the power steering hose clamps recall. I ask the service advisor how long will this take? Im told a couple of hours. I take a day off work to get to the dealership, which costs me $14 to take a ferry one way. I get all the way down there, and Im told they may not have all the parts and its a 24 hour job and that I can have a loner car, as long as I come back the next day. That would cost me a total of $56 in ferry cost and another day off of work. Im in the Navy and taking time off is not easy. I tell the SA that Im willing to wait because, when I made the appointment, I was told it would only take a couple of hours. In the end, I waisted a whole day and $28 just for a 15 minute hose check. Truck is still not fixed. I spoke to the service manager, he told me, service advisors can not tell me how long a job will take because their not techs. How can you be a service adviser if you can not advise on how long a job will take. At that point, SA's are nothing but phone operators.

I've got a 2015 2500HD Diesel that I keep smelling exhaust in the cab from time to time. It also smells "hot" randomly on the outside of the vehicle. Less than a week after buying it, when I shut it down I heard a loud rumbling that sounded like it was coming from deep within the earth. I was in my father's driveway at the time and he was in the yard mowing. It was loud enough that he heard it and it certainly scared the crap out of me.

Dealership says nothing is wrong with it after looking at it. :nonod:

Hi Lightshade,

Very sorry to hear of your concerns with an exhaust smell in your new Sierra. I recognize that your dealership was unable to diagnose this concern. Can you give me any further details? You mentioned this smell is intermittent, does it happen upon cold start or after the car has warmed up? Does it happen when you are going a certain speed?

What concerns did you take it into the dealership for? Did you express your concern about the rumbling noise as well?

You are welcome to send me a private message here on the site with your VIN and contact info!

I'm bringing it back into the dealer on Monday. This is the 3rd time. I'm going to let them take a look at it again. The "hot" smell outside the cab might be from when its been in Regen, but the smell inside the cab and that loud rumbling noise on shut down I still can't figure out.

We'll see what the dealership says this time.

Combine this with OnStar somehow merging my accounts with another person's accounts and the weeks it took to straighten that out and....well, i'm just quite disappointed in GM. Already had to have the passenger seat replaced on day one as it had tears in it. Various knicks on things throughout the cab. Seems like there is not much pride put into the assembly of these vehicles anymore. The driver-side door panel has the "whitened" look to the plastic on one spot from someone hammering it into place hard enough to deform the plastic a bit. I've also noticed that the paint doesn't just chip, it chips in chunks. I've had vehicles with painted bumpers for 12 years now and even the one I drove back when I lived in the mountains out west wouldn't chip like this. Its just disappointing. I shouldn't have to deal with any of this in the 1st month and a half of owning a vehicle.

Don't know about the rumble, but that exhaust smell is likely your DPF doing a regen. The DPF gets super hot during a regen and you will have an exhaust smell inside the cab, more noticable at slower speeds. Hardly noticable at highways speeds.

I think it depends on who you talk to. I took my '14 1500 in for 2 recalls and they said one will take 30 minutes and the other was going to take 2 1/2 hours so I figure 3 hours. It ended up taking 2 1/2 hours for both. I then took it in for the first oil change and tire rotation and it took a hour, but I can't remember how long he told me. The Service Writers sometimes know about how long something takes, especially certain recalls, but if they honestly don't know then they should say they don't know. I'm one of those people that I rather be told something I don't want to hear if it's the truth than tell me a lie. I stopped going to a mechanic just for that and I'm actually glad I stopped since there's a much better one a block away that also does accesories.

I had my 15 LML exhuast leaking at 1000 mi at that same down pipe connection.. changed the gasket and been good since.. Mine does the rumbling sound every once in a while and from what it sounds like there is pressure on the intake manifold side of the turbo from shutting the engine off and the pressure is pushing back through the turbo while its still spinning. Does that make sense?

Mine leaked the day after delivery and smoked the cab out. I read about the problem, so I wasn't too concerned. They pickup the truck up, left a loaner, and fixed it in 1 day. Great service. No problems since then.....

I am having this same problem with my truck. I have taken it in 3 times, twice to have the down pipe looked at. They have replaced it, but I still get the smell every so often. It is not smoking any more, but the smell still comes in the cabin. Is there another problem other than the downpipe replacement?

We are experiencing this issue with our truck as well. We have taken it in 4 times already with only a temporary fix. May I ask how they wound up fixing your truck?
