Article: Holy Crap, Pickup Trucks Have Gotten Expensive!

I just bought my 2014 Z71 LT2 in August. Stickered at 44700, completely loaded. Got it out the door, tax and registration included for 38k. Roughly 35,500 for the truck. Karnut, you got a hell of a deal. I had a dealer's invoice from a place where I know the owner and they didn't make much on mine.

You did just as good for a Z71 Lt2, mine was 40K I got it for 29k before TTL.

The fella that wrote that article is a fool! Not to mention import CAR fanboi! The price of pickups too high

compared to his goofy bmw? Somebodys got to PAY for his all expense paid trip to ride that "manly" truck

thru that stream and woods so he can sip wine and eat lobster afterwards with the other non truck expert

"auto commenters".

Its ME and other folks that NEED a truck for WORK that pay the freight for his free trips and food!

Maybe if WE the buyer got a free trip and test drive when we PAY for that truck it wouldn't hurt so

much when we SIT down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True.. He's talking about a rather small BMW at that, and comparing it to a 4wd 4 seater pickup with an open bed. The truck could TOW HIS CAR with 4 people in it (and 4 more in the car,) His car can't comfortably seat 4 people.

but the whole "I need a truck cos I'm a man and I need to run over stuff" is obviously tongue in cheek. My thought is that he's comparing a truck to a car for people who don't really NEED a truck.

I have a couple acres of land, a gravel drive way (that has recently become impassable for a car.. I need to fix that.) and I like to work on cars, meaning I need to haul engines, vehicles etc. It makes sense for some of us to have trucks. Sure the BMW is nice I'm sure. I had a camaro before this that was fully loaded OTD for 38k and I loved it. It was a road monster, but it was exactly that. A ROAD monster. A little bit of ice on the ground and I was stuck for 6 hours last year. Not only that, but trying to go to sams club in a camaro? You're gonna be unboxing things in the parking lot to fit them in the car.

All that aside though, the open space inside a truck, the bare sheet metal and all doesn't seem to me to really justify their cost. Moreover, have you looked at chevy accessories?? I jokingly told my parts guy I was gonna melt my truck down since it was OBVIOUSLY made of gold!

You guys bashing the writer clearly don't read Jalopnik much. The goofy, tongue in cheek is how most of his stuff is. He's got a couple books out, they're hilarious.

I found it funny especially....

"And then, of course, you choose 4-wheel drive, because this is a truck, and you're a man, and you need to run over stuff. (Unless, of course, you're a woman, in which case you still need to run over stuff.)"

...and boy has my wife ran over stuff intentionally or otherwise, a few times cause I told her to do it...lol. Her Jeep has probably been through just about as much as my truck except for towing.

Expensive?

I can remember back in the 70's saying I would never pay over 10 Grand for any new truck.

Boy, was I wrong. SEVERAL TIMES!

I worked in new car make ready at a Chevy dealership back in the 70s. 10k back then would get you a loaded out Corvette.

The Silverado package back then basically got you carpet, a headliner, door panels and upgraded vinyl bench seats. Trim bling inside & out. I don't remember them being more than about 6k.

I leased my truck, for a verrrrry low price, I only do cheap payment / no money down leases because most leases are a rip off but, in November of 2013 my truck had a sticker of 40k with delivery etc. and they had an advertised sale price of 34,900 if I was looking to buy..... No body pays MSRP. Trucks are pricey, so are cars....

Exactly! I meant in my lifetime. I had to eat my words in the 80's.

Well, ya know who woulda thought 1 person could spend $12 at Wendys or Mcdonalds for a meal?

Then again their "medium" is gallon sized now.

I wasn't around in the 70s. but I was a child of the 80s/90s. It baffles me today when they ask me what size, I say "regular" and they look at me like I have an alien coming out of my nose.

things have just gotten more expensive. Some things we notice it in, some we don't. I only notice it in a vehicle because the base price affects my payments. Used to be you paid for 5 years pretty standard. now they have 6-7-8-10 year loans..

I sometimes wonder if it's some kind of scam to keep us all perpetually in debt, designing vehicles that fall apart just out of warranty and/or just as soon as you pay them off. But.. then I take off my tinfoil hat and use it to line the bottom of my charcoal grill.

I don't think so. The auto makers learned from Crapota and Honda's success from the 80s and 90s and 2000-2010 ish where they overenginrered their stuff and as a result, earned a lot of owner loyalty.

Most brands want you to lease just to get you back into their dealerships more often. Same reason more and more include maintenance.
