Anyone started an LLC?

I've been an electrician for the past 10 years, and I'm now looking to spread my wings a bit and start my own company. I've done a lot of sidejobs in the past, and I have had to turn down some jobs because of lack of licensing or insurance.

As for now, I'm going to keep my 9-5 and just do my personal things when they come available. If things take off well enough, perhaps I will eventually completely go out on my own. I'm going to be doing electrical and general construction, as well as hauling. Having a truck has it's perks!

Do any of you have any helpful tips when you started your company? Anything you wish you would have done differently?

Feel free to ask me more questions about what I am going to do with the company. I'm at the ground floor right now trying to test the waters.

If you're just moonlighting it's really not necessary, but if you want to go it could be nice. A lot of people are more confident hiring a "company" but for a sole prop I don't know how much it really matters. If you want to employ people a corp status could be handy but you have to keep up on records either way

I've done my fair share of moonlighting, but I'm looking to take it more seriously now. I've always wanted to own/run my own company, and I think I am in a great place right now to be able to start a company. I have too many mouths to feed to just jump ship and start full time right now, but I figure a transition would be nice. Some of the "customers" I have done business for in the past have some potential long term jobs, but are looking for an actual company to handle them. The actual cost of having the company will be minimal since I won't have any employees or overhead to pay.
