Keep the truck I've got or buy a new one?

So I've been checking out some of the new trucks lately and been wondering if I should go for it. Mine is an 08 with about 95k miles on her. Been a great truck and is easily my favorite vehicle I've owned and because of that I've never owned a single vehicle this long before. Minimal things have gone wrong with her...a few sensors and a broken leaf in one of the springs..

My considerations are a new Silverado or possibly a Colorado pending what I think when I see in person and drive one.

What makes me hold back is maybe waiting until they put the 8 speed tranny in the 5.3L, or see what kinda numbers we're going to see with the 8 speed in the 6.2L.

Also curious to see what the diesel will do in the Colorado but then I don't know if I could see myself buying a diesel.

I guess I'm kinda thinking that at this mileage I will likely have to put a few bucks into it and I'm trying to decide if I want to do that or just avoid it and buy a new one.

I feel as though I'm waiting for a the perfect time to buy one...but is there really one? I mean there will always be something else new coming out....or maybe I'm just using that as an excuse to not sell mine? LOL

My question to you guys is...What would you likely do?

If I were you I would wait until the things you listed like the 8 speed and the diesel in the Colorado. The longest vehicle I had was my 98 which I had for 10 years and got back in '04. I just didn't take good care of it (driving wise) so I was tired of doing major fixes so when the engine siezed I went ahead and got the '14. If I could have waited, then I would have. From what you said, seems like it's too good of a truck to get rid of so soon. MAybe even consider keeping it and still get a Colorado/Canyon. It's always nice to have more than one vehicle for transportation. I've never had that luxury which is partly why I got a brand new truck. I figured no fixing for awhile. And luckily my '14 has been problem free unless about 20-25% of them.

Thanks for the input guys...interesting how everyone says wait and 2 of the 3 of you have 2014s...

I would keep this truck except I already have a summer car which I won't be parting with. I have a feeling as I've seen usually happen to guys in their 50s...that this is going to be "that vehicle" I wished I had kept lol .. I've had it since new and for me to keep a vehicle 6 1/2 years, that's truly impressive.

Im almost 59, I have almost always missed the one I traded when I bought a new one. I have never traded a wore out truck. But if money isn't an issue these 14s are best ive seen in a long time as far as improvements go.

I would say wait for the 8 speed to hit the 5.3L as it is what you want & would imagine there will be a slight mpg increase?

As well, might as well get something new for the money.

But there is also that resale value part of this equation when a truck has 95-98 thousand miles vs over 100 thousand.

It is a theoretical debate & there really is no difference, it is just the mindset when trading or selling to a private party.

You could do a lot with the money you'd spend on a new one... New sled, quad, boat, beer... The list is endless.

Hmmm...new sled....beer...I'm liking the direction this is going! lol

Don't get a 14 too early yet to get into that mess

Ya the year one of any model is always a consideration...very good point.

That 8 speed is really making me think twice.... Even the Colorado is initially coming out with a 6 speed.

I have 138,000 on my 2006 Sierra, 360,000 on my 1990 Toyota HiLux. I like to get my money out of my vehicles. I would not trade for newer until at least 200,000 miles. I will never buy new again after the 2007 Tacoma fiasco, but that's just me. I figure that even of the engine and tranny both grenade, it's still cheaper to fix that than to finance a new truck.

But if it's a matter if different equipment, things you want that you don't currently have, that complicates the equation.

In my opinion that's the only way you'll ever get the money out of a vehicle, running it until it won't run any more, and then fixing it and continuing.

And if you look at capabilities of the new pickups... They aren't THAT much better. The one you have now will handle a boat, skidoo trailer, or bed full of beer perfectly fine.

I was behind the eight ball with an avalanche of repairs on my 2006 Silverado (93,000 miles) when I leased my current 2013.....if it weren't for the 2 months of Front Diff rebuild, then Transfer Case rebuild, and then 2 weeks later, R/F Wheel Bearing, Axle Seal, Front Pads and Rotors being torn up from the seriously bad bearing.....I would of kept my 2006 and enjoy payment free ownership....it was too much going wrong, too quickly
