Is the 6.2L just a stroked 5.3L, or a completely different block?

Recommended Posts

L83 (the 5.3) has a bore of 96.01mm (3.779 inches ) and stroke of 92mm (3.62 inches).

L86 (the 6.2) has a bore of 103.25mm (4.064 inches) and stroke of 92mm (3.62 inches).

So...L86 is a bored L83 in a sense. I think gen 3 and 4 6.0 and 6.2 have been a 4 inch bore or slightly larger since gen 3 LS debuted.

Biggest of the bunch is of course the LS7 with its 104.8mm (4.125 inch) bore and 101.6mm (4 inch) stroke.

It's bored because it doesn't have to work hard to be awesome. Just kinda shows up and BAM!...awesome.

Ok, it's a bad joke. Please, carry on.

I was looking on the gmauthority website looking for specificications for the L86 (6.2L), and I noticed it has the same bore as the L83 (5.3L). So is the 6.2L just a stroked version of the 5.3L, or is the block completely different?

Effectively the gen 3/4 engines and now the gen 5 engines are all using roughly the same block within their engine family. It's one of the great things about GM V8 vehicles, because it makes engine swaps INCREDIBLY easy if you already started out with a V8. Heck, if you want to throw a 6.2L or larger in, just go find a junkyard 5.3L, etc and have it punched out and sleeved.

So that makes the LS7 7.0L even more interesting as you could turn any 4.8L or 5.3L into a 427 if you were that adventurous.

This is why I love GM.

I love the Lsx family of engines. They're not all that bad to work on, they're all physically the same size block wise, bolts line up, just.. overall a real pleasure.

It's the SBC of the new age of hotrodders imo.

I've PLANNED LS swaps for years  got close to doin one on my 2000 z28 camaro until I just got frustrated with the car. (I just knew that Lq4 was gonna blow the rest of my powertrain away.)

I've carried home 2 LSx engines from salvage yards, had one rebuilt, stripped the other one down and sold it for cheap when it turned out to have ~200k more miles on it than the yard claimed. (alwatys check your vins people! BEFORE you buy!)

Does the 6 speed 6.2 truck and the 5.3 truck use the same tranny? If so, you're probably a fuel pump, injectors, maybe TB and of course the long block away from a drop in 6.2 in any '14/15 truck. Not so useful right now, but when these trucks get to be 10-20 years old.. that'll be good to know right there.

Wonder what parts and kind of money it would take? If someone had specifics that would be great. Currently I am looking at putting a SC on mine but if I could turn it into a 427, more tuned for a truck, for comparable money I would rather go that route.

You are correct, Overlooked that part. A 427 truck just sounds better though to me for some reason.

Might be a stupid question, but do all the 1500s have the same engine bay layout? Like do the 4.6, 5.3, an 6.2 motors all have the same exact front ends and they can have any of these three motors mounted in them?

Pretty much. Maybe a computer might be mounted somewhere different or something stupid like that but its more or less the same regardless of engine in the 1500 trucks.
