Tuning manual trans mode..

Recommended Posts

I don't follow? You can leave the transmission in M all the time and then knock down gears the same as you would in the G8. When I get onto the highway I often leave the trans in M4 till I'm done merging to keep the engine revved up so I can jump into traffic if needed, then shift to 6th.

No it's not the same. If your in a high gear at a low rpm in M mode and hit the gas it will downshift on it's own. Most M modes(G8 was one) provide full manual capability as in you downshift or upshift.

For our trucks, yes sometimes if your at a high rpm it will stay in the selected gear as the computer won't let it downshift.

Thats because the RPM is too high and you'd hit redline. If you try to downshift in any automated manual mode at too high an RPM, you'll be denied a shift then too.

My thing is if I am cruising around in M4 at 1500 rpm and mash it without wanting it to downshift I cant. I would love that ability. Next best thing to an actual manual transmission which we can't have either.

Why would you not want it to downshift at full throttle?

Maybe mash it was a bad choice of words. Lets say 1/2 throttle in the lower rpm's. The way I am set up my engine doesn't lug much at all, it doesn't need to down shift 3/4 of the times it does. Just annoying really.

I follow what your looking for, if I had my way Id have a stick shift. The last semi up model truck I could get a stick in was an F150 sport ford. It came from the factory color matched, and V8 and a 5 speed stick. You could cruise at HWY speeds in 5TH on the freeway hit hills and pass and leave it in 5TH it would manage no problem and get good gas mileage. Ive seen my truck drop two gears on the freeway and this truck has over a hundred more HP than that ford did. I did put a S/C on it later. That truck was fun with a stick. These trucks are a little quick on the downshift.

It's ok not to agree with why we want it. lol Or, maybe go drive a stick and you might have a better idea. The point is, there are M modes that can act just like a manual and that's what we are after. We know the technology is there..

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, I'm just trying to understand why you would. For better or worse the new engines power peak is at higher RPMs now and I can't see any reason not to let it spin up to 3-4000 RPM on a hill if that's what it takes.

And I've owned two manual transmission vehicles. I'm pretty well over the whole mindset of them being somehow superior because they're simply not in most cases. Maybe in some little econobox or small engine sports car where you need to keep the engine on boil for power but manuals in trucks suck, they're not nice to drive, they had reduced payload and towing numbers in their final years and manual transmissions make modern vehicles slower in the real world so I'm set.

Yep, it combines the best of both worlds. Nice to have that option.

Sorry man, i don't know how else to explain our logic for wanting it. And I disagree with the power curve of the new engines.. or at least on the new 6.2 vs old 6.2. More power under the curve and peak power is at a lower rpm. L86 = 420hp at 5600 rpm / 460tq at 4100rpm... vs.. L92(4) = 403hp at 5700rpm / 417tq at 4300rpm. Don't have to rev it or be in a lower gear for simple accelaration.

  • 4 weeks later...

sooperdave, you NEED a duramax.

They're all 3.73's

Max torque is torq 1600rpm

765ft-lb and nearly 400 hp

Merge while pulling a trailer and smoke the guy beside you that figured since you were towing he could take you.

I don't have a problem with power. Mine has 3.73's. And If I was pulling quite often then yes I might would have considered a Dmax. I'm completely satisfied cept the reason for this thread.. and it's only minor.
