Cargo Lights on with Reverse Lights

Recommended Posts

OH! You're talking about the other diode, that's for the fog lights on when parking lights are on. The blue wire is #22 for the parking lights, the other end is in #10 the fog light wire, brown with white stripe. Check out the fog light thread.

I want thank you for posting this up. I would of never figured this out on my own but with your pics its simple. This is by far the cheapest thing I have done to my truck and how it should of been from the factory. For a trip to radio shack a $1.50 and less then 3mins you can do this and the fog lights on with bright lights. Its a must for everyone that has these trucks.

Are there more simple mods like this that I have missed?

Okay so I was inspired by 2 threads here, one being the fog lights on with high beams, which I did and love. The other is a thread about putting a switch in the bed by the tailgate to turn on the cargo lights. That's a great idea but I wanted something simpler, so using the info in the fog light thread, and the link to the wire diagrams, I found the relay switch wires for the cargo lights and the reverse lights then used an extra diode from the fog light trick to connect the two. Now when it's dark and you unlock your doors with the remote, which activates the headlights and reverse lights, the cargo lights come on as well. This does activate the lights by the third brake light as well as the lights in the bed, just as if you pushed the switch on the dash. This is going to activate the cargo lights when you put the truck in reverse also, which will provide more light behind the truck, but it may glare off the rear window as well. I will be testing this tonight to see if I like it or not.

The reverse light relay wire is in the same brown plug as the fog lights. Number 26, its brown with 2 blue stripes.

The cargo light relay wire is also number 26, brown wire white stripe, but it's in the pink plug to the left of the brown plug.

I used the other diode from the 2 pack I bought to do the fog lights ( part # 1N004). The stripe goes toward the cargo lights in the pink plug.

As long as there's not too much glare to see while reversing at night then this should be a handy little trick!!

Thanks

According the download manual I have the pin this uses to for reverse lights should be empty, but it's not and this mod works. I'm looking for the horn control pin, but the 19 pin is not the right color and it doesn't work with the horn. Can someone please tell me what pin and connector the horn control is? Thanks

First time to upload pic. Hope this works.

Thanks for figuring this out, El Conquistador. I did mine the exact opposite of the pic so that my reverse lights come on when I hit the cargo switch. This way I can tie all additional backup lights I add (mirrors and I’m planning some for the rear bumper) to the backup circuit. And when I want to see with the vehicle off I can hit the cargo light switch and they’ll turn on. But, the stock cargo lights (3rd brake and led bed) won’t come on when I put it in reverse.

If you were to put another diode in the opposite direction, then would it allow the reverse light to come on with the cargo lamps when you turn it on via the cab switch since the 2nd resistor would allow the electricity to flow the opposite way of the original?

I am curious becuase I am getting ready to add a VLEDs license plate frame light to add 3500 lumens when in reverse

If the second diode idea works, then I can hook up the light to either the cargo or the reverse, if it wouldn't work, then I would rather hook the light to the cargo lamps so I can use the light at night when I use the cargo lamps.

Just wondering if it worked, did you attempt it yet? with the 2 diodes going in the opposite direction . Lmk, sounds like a good idea.

Did this the other day. Works like a charm and is extremely simple. Thanks for the write up! Now to try to do the fogs on with highs.

Mike- did you end up just using a strand of wire? Nothing special I assume, right?

"Tabbing wire", i believe is the right term.

No I never used it. I currently have just the single diode to keep the cargos on with reverse. I am still considering doing the wire at some point to try it.

So I did the fog lights on with hi beam mod and had no problems what so ever. Works great and is a super easy/cheap (free even) mod. I then tried this mod out and have not got it to work. I only had like 5 minutes, but I definitely had the diode in the correct pins and facing the correct way as OP stated (diode "stripe" running towards pink connector). Was wondering if anyone had an idea why this would not be working, I'll try again tomorrow, but thought I would put this out there in the meantime.

were you just not able to get the diode to stay in place at first? When I first went to do this mod i had some trouble getting the diode to want to stay in
