I need some new shocks for my [cough]beast[cough] It's a 94 GMC s15 Jimmy 4x4, stock susp., I am looking at Edelbrock IAS shocks, but they only have a 90 day warranty on them, which I think is f*cked up since they are 70 bucks a piece. Anyway, let me know...

Tom

BTW:I posted in this forum b/c it is off road suspension, and I posted in the Jimmy forum because they have more of a vehicle specific suggestion.

I have heard that the Rancho 5000's aren't worth it, but the other Rancho shocks are, I like the idea of the RSX's being $25 cheaper each though... Thanks for your opinion, I am still not sure what to do, I guess it depends on my dad  He is the one that bought my brother the $10 a piece shocks form Pepboys with a lifetime warranty, and after a year, the body roll is so bad he can't stand it and all my dad can say is they have a lifetime warranty so go get another set! Oh well...

I went to the Bilstein website, and couldn't navigate it worth s*%t, I ended up getting pissed off... Is this Offroad Wharehouse on the internet or is it actually a place/magazine? I am als curious which Bilstein shock is equivalent to the Edelbrock or Ranch RSX, this is the type of shock I want, the self adjustable according to the terrain... Thanks for the replies, and keep me posted please...

I've been putting Bilstein shocks on my trucks for several years now and I think they're great!

Also, as unbelievable as it seems, the local Auto Zone stores still sell them for $49.99 each!  They have to order them but the shocks arrive in a couple or three days.  I recently put a set on my '00 Sierra and paid $200 for 'em.  What a deal!

Tarheelz, what type of bilstein shock did you put on there? I am curious how well it would compare to the RSX/IAS... I am fixing to try and navigated that damned bilstein website again... Thanks for the info...

I tried to go with Autozone for mine, but they were on backorder and couldn't give me an arrival date, thus I went with Off-Road Warehouse and had good luck.  Same or close price too.

I've got rancho adjustables now, and they're great.. but being adjustable is more about finding the setting you like and leaving it.  I didn't get the in-dash adjustment dealio on the recommendation of the owner of the place I was ordering from (he had the same truck, lift, and shocks), and honestly, once I found the best setting, I haven't touched them since.  When it comes time to replace them, I think I'll go with Bilstein's.

I've always had good experiences with Bils, but after getting into Dental School and having no extra $$ to spend I found cheaper alternatives.  I've recently been replacing my Bils for Gabriel VST's, only 19.99$ at AutoZone and they have a lifetime warranty!  I thought the ride was much better with these shocks than with the Bils.  You may already have bought new ones, but for stock supension vehicles I'd highly recommend them!  Just put a set of 4 on my truck, huge improvement, and for a total of 84$, with a lifetime warranty, don't think there's a better deal out there.  Chris

I just reread my first post and realized that the 90 day warranty on the IAS was from Summit, but when I went to the Edelbrock website it said they have a lifetime warranty. Chris97k1500, does the Bil's not have a lifetime warranty on em? Just curious if that is why you went with the Gabriels...also, do you take your truck off road, if so how do those shocks do off road...

I don't know if I said it or not, but I do take my truck offroad alot, and need a good susp. for the off road part, but since I drive alot on the road (225 miles from home to college, usually go home atleast 2 times a month and on top of that alot of in town driving) I need it good for that as well. This is why I am looking at the self adjusting shocks. I do think that the RS9000's would be nice, but I think they are more expensive than the IAS' will be(?).

Thanks alot for the suggestions, and I am not going to get the shocks until June 12, which is my B-day, so if you can think of any other shocks that would do good for both Street and off road let me know...

I've never had the Bils on my Chevy Truck, only on the Blue Toyota Truck you can see in my Webshots page.  I did take it offroad a fair amount, not rock crawling, but mud and sand rock driving mostly.  The Bils I had on it originally were for stock height trucks, since I got those I put about 6" of lift on it and they had no extension left and was limiting my down travel.  I needed something and didn't want to pay 90$+ for the Bils that worked with lifted trucks.  So I did some referencing shock info on the net and found that the new Tahoe rear shocks would give me the exact amount of extension and compression I needed.  I had relocated the mounts for the shocks so they looked like this / \ straight up over the rear axle.  I was so impressed with how these rode, they don't cost alot of $$, which is my biggest thing right now, that I got them for my Chevy.  Since I knew I was going to be taking the truck offroad, I didn't want to spend lots of money knowing I may break one on the trail.  Even though the Bils had a lifetime warranty, I didn't want to fool with the hassle.  All I have to do is just take them back to AutoZone and they will hand me a new one.  The Bils worked fine for me offroad, but I saw no difference between them and Gabriels on the same trails.  If I had to do over I'd save my $$ I spent on the Bils and buy something else.  Basically for the price of 1 Bil I got 3 Gabriels with the same warranty.  Also, I don't know if you know this, but Rancho shocks are made by Tenneco Automotive Corp. which also makes Monroe shocks as well as a few others.  My Bro in-law has a pair of 5000's in the front and 9000's in the rear of his Dodge Ram, he hates them and just switched over the the Gabriels after he rode in my truck.  Granted his is a Solid Axle, but after the swap to the Gabriels, it actually drove pretty smooth.  So if you thought about getting Rancho's, you might want to look into the Monroe sensa-traks.  Sorry this is so long, but I just wanted you to know what I think.  Don't get me wrong, the Bils are great shocks, but being a little older than I was when I got the Bils (and $$ not as plentiful!), I wouldn't spend that much money again!  Chris
