Oil recommendation for 2014 silver ado 5.3

Recommended Posts

I greatly appreciate the input on this topic, The dealership does offer free oil changes for two years but that is only 4 oil changes total as the dealership has informed me so that is pretty much useless as i change my oil more often the 7500 plus they tell you to run it as i am not a fan of the crap they use. Also on that note i will not be continuing receiving these free oil changes as i no longer trust the dealership when it comes to changing my oil and what kind of oil they use as when i bought my last truck and took it into the dealership for the free oil changes after almost two years of owning the truck and them changing my oil i developed a sticking lifter noise, after scratching my head on what could be causing the issue i decided to switch to royal purple full synthetic and it cured the issue. Lastly when it comes to changing my oil intervals i am still a firm believer in every 3,000-5,000 at the max as yes engine oil has gotten a lot better over the years i just hold tight to the cheap insurance of changing the oil more often to keep a clean lubricant in my truck.

I never said it was bad but many think GM is only recommending dexos because it has to be used. They are unaware that GM makes money every time someone purchases a quart of oil with the dexos logo on it.

Very slick approach to gaining the oil change biz share. I've always been a guy that changed my own oil. With trucks, I don't need to jack or use ramps. It takes me about 15-20 minutes, less if I'm in a hurry.

Thankfully, most of the synthetics we use to change our own oil can be had at popular retailers or quick lube places and are compliant with the Dexos standard. I ran into this first with my 2011 Silverado, but was quite comfortable using Mobil1 products since purchasing a GTO and Cadillac CTS-V that came with Mobil1 and use it in my wife's T/A. I know the standard Dexos oil the dealer uses is a blend, but I generally switch to full synthetic regardless.

I typically change my own oil/filter too or provide it to the oil change shop if I am in a hurry.

After my first free changes, it is back to Mobil1 for me. By the way, i don't put a lot of miles on my vehicles, so my dealer is changing my truck's oil every 6 months regardless of miles (which turns out to be around 3K miles). They told me it is my choice, but limited to 4.

Do you know what the price difference from dexos to another oil of the same l/k/q? Is there a big price difference? Every company has to make money on the consumer to stay in business.

No, that information is not disclosed.

According to industry sources familiar with Dexos, GM will calculate the flat fee by using the total passenger car motor oil market in gallons, GM’s market share percentage and the oil marketer’s market share percentage. GM uses those three numbers to calculate the potential number of gallons of an oil marketers’ PCMO – everything, not just Dexos – that could end up in GM vehicles. The automaker does this individually for each region, sources indicate, though an oil marketer has to buy a global license. GM then charges a per-gallon fee on the resulting number, sources said.

I will go with a WIX and 0w-20 Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic...all 8.5 quarts.... has anyone did an oil change yet. Alot of times it takes most of what is listed so is it more like 8 quarts in real world oil changing?

I have never heard of anybody having engines problems from running an off-brand oil. But I did "fix" a persistant lifter ticking problem by switching to High Mileage Pennzoil in my '96 Silverado. I also know a couple of people that never change their oil, but they don't keep their trucks longer than 60k miles before trading in. I wouldn't worry about which oil, as long as it's the correct weight. Same thing with the duration - I can't understand why people throw money at 3-5k mile intervals. I'll likely go with whatever is the cheapest at Walmart. I do splurge for the Fram Tough Guard filter though - LOL. Can't beat it for $6. Though with the longer change intervals, I may jump up to the $9 Ultra filter.

I would stick to a full synthetic dexos1 oil and AC delco oil filters. I personally have run mobil1 afe 0w20 for both of my changes. I had my first batch of used oil analyzed and it was recommended that I could run the current fill to 9500 mile interval.

If you use the delco blend the dealers fill with, I would not go under 10% on the oil life monitor.
